Race Blind Admission

Hi, just wanted to know if race blind colleges are common, (I think they are generally not), and if so, which notable big colleges are race blind? (Ex. Caltech)

Anyone who can contribute will be appreciated

Thanks

I believe all the public schools in California have race-blind policies.

@shawnspencer is correct in that California Public universities (CSU/UC) do not take race into consideration for admission purposes.

International students often face much lower acceptance rates, AND they usually get truly awful financial aid, so your bitterness is misplaced.

I believe 8 states have banned race-based admissions in their public schools: Arizona, California, Florida, Michigan, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Oklahoma and Washington.

Legally, public schools in California cannot consider race in admissions policies. However, UCLA and Berkley have actively tried to get around the ban.

A book about UCLA and their admissions scandal.

How UCB does it:

UCB and UCLA most certainly are legally getting around the law and favor URM’s

UCB and UCLA get 5 freshman applicants for every admission. Even a 4.2+ GPA gives you about a 50/50 shot at both campuses.

That’s why they use holistic review process. They do look at things like your high school, first gen to attend college and other factors that allow them to offer special consideration to under-served communities (that is the point of affirmative action). Race isn’t one of the factors considered. Of course, that neither benefits nor hurts any one race.

Total nonsense. URM’s have a much higher rate of admission based on their stats.

I know, right? When will white people ever get a fair shake?

Victim mentality, smh

Yea… because the UCs are FULL of URMs! @SAY, google before you say dumb things.

It helps if your parents have the money to hire extensive test prep and class tutors, enroll you in private pay summer programs and classes, and ask their friends to give you “research work” to do. Not many URMs are in that boat

MODERATOR’S NOTE: aka Kiss of Death for this thread

This is the question the OP asked. Any further answers should address this question, and this question only, and not address any posters who attempt to hijack the thread.

The only elite race blind school is Cal Tech. UCLA and UCB have found a legal way to get around 209.
URM’s have a big advantage at all other elite schools though less than being an athletic recruit. This information is not controversial. But yes but at the vast majority of colleges race makes very little difference because these non-selective schools have an nearly open admission process. For instance Univ of Arizona and Colorado have acceptance rates above 70%. In fact very few schools are selective but the top schools get all the attention on this site and by the media.

Re: http://www.seaphe.org/pdf/uclaadmissions.pdf

Richard Sanders claims in the paper above that “We find that administrators in the holistic period simply admitted students with the same holistic score at different rates, depending on the race of the applicant.” Table 8 on the last page of the paper is the basis of the claim.

However, these does not seem to be mention that admission standards could vary between different majors applied to at UCLA.

This data is definitive and your explanation is not credible. UCLA while giving a substantial advantage to URM’s is minor league compared to the elite private schools. There is nothing to argue about here. You can find a dozen good books on this subject on Amazon with the Price of Admission probably the best though the former President of Harvard also has a similar book. But as I said race has nothing to do with admissions at 90% of the colleges in America.

If no one can come up with any schools not mentioned that are known to be race blind by the end of the week, this thread will be closed. Again, no posts about AA as a policy, just list any schools you know to be race blind.

It is easy to find out by looking under the admissions tab for the college’s entry on http://www.collegedata.com .

Although certainly not elite, Hillsdale is race blind. Don’t get me wrong, its a good liberal arts school, just VERY conservative. They have been race blind for a while now.

Debatable.
