Hmm... Good questions.
Aggies tend to be quite a bit more conservative than the average American, and somewhat more conservative than the average urban Texan, but not as conservative as a typical rural Texan. Stereotypical? Yes, but that's the general feeling I get. I was raised in a small ranching town and A&M feels moderate or even liberal to me. But my friends from larger cities sometimes remark about how conservative it is here.

About racism: I am not of a minority group at Texas A&M. However, I have never observed anything that I believed to be racism. Aggies as a general rule are usually friendly and considerate rather than crass and judgemental. Rascist undertones may be there, but I'm not aware of them. There are always a few bad apples. But I haven't experienced, observed, or heard about anything rascist in the time I've been here. There's a strong feeling of "We're all Aggies" that sort of nips racism in the bud.
I'd like to comment, though, on homosexuality. This is a very religious student body. I get the feeling that most students believe homosexuality to be a sin, but that most would keep that belief to themselves and would certainly never be rude about it. We're all Aggies, remember?

I don't attend texas A&M so the person above may have had the better answer but here is my two cents. Did u hear about the controversy where some university students put black shoe polish on their faces to imitate black people or the video made portraying a slave and slave master in which the the person acting as the slave was being beaten and raped? Those were texas A&M kids....racist? ...maybe just a bit sarcasm. I am black and will be visiting the campus for two days so i'll repost after i go!!!!

Hmm... I hadn't heard about that. According to what I read, the students involved were expelled, and the other 40,000 students here generally hate that now the rest of the world judges them for what those three losers did. I assure you, if that happened now, we would react exactly as we did then: shock, utter disgust, and demands to the administration that the perpetrators of such blatant hate be punished to the fullest extent possible.

After you visit, I would be interested in hearing about your experience here! Keep me posted.

I completely agree premedpenguin that i do not have an accurate description of the university becuase i have not had the oppurtunity to visit. Just like any other university, there are people who are racist, and Texas A&M isn't the exception. Thats why i'm visiting. Texas A&M has a reputation on my part of the east coast for being a conservative and somewhat racist school, but it's an excellent university so i will give it a chance and visit. Like i said i'll re-post after i visit in June. Hopefully, and i believe it will be, a very pleseant experience! Keep in mind though that unfortunately no matter what university you attend, you will encounter some degree of intolerance whether your a minority or not. Don't let it bug you; not everyone's like that. Oh yeh i also heard that Texas A&M is working hard to increase the diversity of their campus. So if you are a minority and your smart and score well on the SAT, they might actually help you out with a bit of your tuition if u decide to attend! GOOD LUCK!

Im actually kind of a minority but not really.....im lebanese but considered caucasian and i dont look lebanese but i went to a minority engineering camp their last summer and it was about half white and half black and all of the staff was minorities attending the university and they were all really mice and all loved texas a&m as much as any one else.....i believe about as much rascism happens here as it happens in any other colleghe you might attend...

My S is there, and he isn't racist. I haven't heard him talk about anything going on that sounded racist, either. He is in the Corps of Cadets, and it seems to me that the Corps has a slightly higher percentage of minorities than the university as a whole, but I'm not certain of that. Minority cadets are not infrequently chosen by their peers for leadership positions, so that should say something.

Now, how the male cadets feel about having female cadets in the Corps is a whole 'nother issue. There is one dorm that has only all-male Corps units in it. They call it "The Last Castle". :-)

Yes, it is racist. I've known a couple of students there that went to my school and other nearby schools. They are nice people but here and there they cross the line between jokes and racist comments.

I believe the OP asked if there were MANY racists at A&M, not if there were ANY racists at A&M. Knowing two people who went to A&M who might be racists doesn't constitute sufficient knowledge to answer the question.
