Hey! I've gathered that it rains pretty hard and frequently in New Orleans. There was never much need for a raincoat where I'm from, but lots of people have advised me to bring a raincoat, rain boots, and an umbrella. I've got the rain boots, but as for a raincoat... should I be looking at something more expensive (Columbia or London Fog brand), or a simple nylon poncho? What's most common around campus? Any suggestions as to the type of umbrella either?

Am assuming you are female by your sn. Get a small umbrella that you can fit in your purse or backpack. If you want a raincoat, get a reasonably priced one that you wont get upset if you accidentally leave behind somewhere and lose.

I am shocked, shocked I say, by such a sexist remark! LOL, just tweaking you.

I think you will need both a lightweight poncho for the August/September/October rains when it is too warm for a trenchcoat and a somewhat heavier coat for the often cooler to downright cold November/December/January/February rains. While it is true that New Orleans rarely gets below freezing, or even below 40, it is a very damp cold when it is 40’s and low 50’s and feels much colder sometimes. Then the nicer trenchcoat type apparel will be appreciated.

I’ve lived in the New Orleans area for years, and I’m attending Tulane in the fall. I never see people wearing ponchos, raincoats in the city or suburbs. I’ve never been on campus while it was raining, so I don’t know what the students on campus do (especially students who had previously lived in dry climates). But, I imagine that it should be the same. In my opinion, it’s too hot and humid to be wearing ponchos or coats during July-October. I would simply suggest an umbrella. You could buy rain boots, I guess. But I never really see anyone wearing those either.
You’ll mostly be using the umbrella in September. It doesn’t rain too much after that.
Heavy rain is mostly a problem during the summer. This year it was pretty bad. We had a one week drought in June. July was a month long monsoon. Literally rained almost everyday.
In the winter, I always wear hoodies. And If it rains, I just cover my head with my hood. However, the winter rain is never as frequent or as heavy as the summer rain.
An umbrella would suffice in my opinion.

If you come and you feel you need more than just an umbrella, then simply buy your poncho/rain coat/boots here.
Good Luck :)

i would say that rainboots are incredibly popular on campus and i would definitely recommend bringing a pair (or buying a pair in nola). Also, I would bring a small umbrella, I kept one in my bag all year round and it definitely came in handy. I did bring a light raincoat with me, I wore it sometimes…depending on what I was planning on doing.
