Random questions about life at UCSD

Just a few questions:

1) Would you recommend getting a foam topper for the beds in the dorms? My daughter will be in Sixth College.

2) Do students only pay for what they eat in the dining halls, or is it a set fee per meal?

3) Any comments from vegans on the food at UCSD and are some places better than others?

Thanks!

It wouldn’t hurt. You can get them cheap at Target. That’s where I got all my bedding stuff.

You pay for what you eat.

I’m not vegan so I don’t know for sure but there always seems to be decent vegetarian options around campus. Here’s the Housing and Dining website. It should hopefully be of some help.

DEFINITELY get the foam topper! One of the best things I brought to college. Mine was from costco - great buy and super comfortable, the dorm mattresses are like rocks.

Actually, my bed (in the Marshall dorms) was too soft.

Regarding the meals: I’m not a vegetarian, but I’ve noticed that at most dining halls, there’s always vegetarian pizza, pasta, salad, sandwiches/wraps, veggie burgers at the grill. Sometimes they have “meatless” specials–usually a wrap with grilled vegetables. I’m not sure if these options are vegan.

Hope this helps!

Thanks everyone!

If there are any vegans out there at UCSD, I’d sure like to hear your thoughts about dorm food.

(Vegans are more restrictive than vegetarians in that they don’t eat dairy, eggs, or honey. So all those cheesy non-meat dishes won’t work.)

I’m not a vegan myself, but there’s a vegetarian option everyday. I also have a suitemate that is a vegan and she eats at the dining halls daily. For example, one option of vegetarian food is “Vegetarian Roasted Veggie and Red Pepper Hummus Burrito.” I’m not sure if that’s vegan friendly or not but for the most part, if all else fails, there’s always pasta, sandwiches, and veggie pizzas.

You can view the menu here: http://hds.ucsd.edu/diningservices/menu/dailyspecials.aspx

I’ve only been to UCSD to visit for a week last semester, but I’m vegan and never had a problem with finding food I could eat. Hi Thai was pretty decent.

Appreciate the links and comments!

Hello, SFMom, I just finished my first year in Sixth College, so I might be able to offer you some information.

Just a few questions:

1) Would you recommend getting a foam topper for the beds in the dorms? My daughter will be in Sixth College.

-Yes, I would recommend one, but if your daughter isn’t picky it’s not really a problem – the mattresses aren’t GREAT, but they aren’t terrible either (the normal springy ones)

2) Do students only pay for what they eat in the dining halls, or is it a set fee per meal?

-Students pay for what they eat in the dining halls – each entree’/side/drink/snack you buy, you pay for individually. It gets annoying after a while, ESPECIALLY since all the dining halls are notorious for their super super high prices, but it’s not too bad.

3) Any comments from vegans on the food at UCSD and are some places better than others?

-One of my suitemates was a vegetarian, and he normally doesn’t have too much of a problem. There is a nice selection of shopping centers right down the street on via la jolla that I’m sure offer a multitude of vegan choices if she feel sunsatisfied with the food on campus (which wouldn’t be surprising, seeing as I’m not a vegan and I get frustrated :D)

For example, there’s Ralph’s, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods (further down), and Mrs. Gooch’s (which I happened to visit on the very last day and is VERY impressive in terms of healthy foods/snacks – I’m sure there are vegan options here). It’s a 15-20 min. walk away, or a simple bus ride away (which I would recommend).

I just got home after leaving the dorms in Sixth just yesterday afternoon, and I’m really going to miss it – part of the reason I had such a good time was because the building I ended up in were filled with amazing people – I hope the same for your daughter.
