RANK in order of prestige. (Just curious.)

Rank the following in order of their prestige in India.
Cornell, Columbia, Penn, Berkeley and Northwestern.

Penn, columbia, cornell, northwestern, berkeley

Berkeley
Penn (Wharton)
Northwestern (Kellog)
Cornell
Columbia

This is very subjective and they are all great schools. JMHO

^ I would switch Berkeley with Wharton for the top spot. Wharton’s reputation in Asia is matched only by HYPS’.

Columbia
Cornell
Berkeley
Penn
Northwestern

For business, Penn goes to #1.

All right. I hope you all posted those ranks with respect to an Indian context, right? I believe those were general university prestige ranks. What about specifically for engineering? (Just prestige.)

Berkeley and cornell are the most well known ones for engg.N/w is more of an unknown entity sadly.Columbia simply rocks, but I’ve yet to hear from someone other than me that C is their dream school.Penn’s engg is overinflated over here.It just borderline good, yet citezens of India consider Penn’s engg to be great.

Engineering?

Berkeley
Cornell
Northwestern
Columbia
Penn

Oh yeah, pix is correct. Penn’s reputation for engineering is inflated in India.

Penn really doesn’t have a reputation for engineering in India.

Engineering-
Berkeley
Columbia
Cornell
Penn/Northwestern

All right thanks. Your prestige-rankings mostly resounded with the USnews ranking.

perfectpixie, Columbia is awesome. No doubts about that. What do you love about Columbia? The faculty, the NYC-factor, the overwhelming alumni complete with the maximum number of Nobel laureates?

The faculty.The awfully amazing PEOPLE.
The academically challenging curriculum. The Core is sounding better to me day by day.
Not the NYC factor.I’d rather remain away from the city since I’ll be spending the rest of my life in one.

Columbia’s got the largest no. of billionaire alumni.

I detest the Columbia Core Curriculum. With a passion.

^Not that I know of. I thought it’s Harvard by miles.

OP, Northwestern definitely has better engineering than Columbia. But I guess prestige in India got almost nothing to do with it.

Oh you’re right. Columbia is 4th.

^ Nope. 3rd this year.

[In Pictures: Billionaire Universities - 3. Columbia University - Forbes.com](In Pictures: Billionaire Universities)

As far as engineering goes it’s -
Cal
Cornell
Northwestern
Columbia
Penn

Penn’s reputation is inflated. Northwestern’s engineering program is underrated in India. And Berkeley, for undergrad, might not be the right place given all the problems they have. If you can’t take classes you need/want then what’s the point?

And I’ve done a year of engineering at NU and now I’m at the CoE at Columbia… there’s NO match. Northwestern’s engineering program is hands down better. In terms of prestige, it’s closer to Cornell imo after looking at the Indian companies that recruit there [Infosys and TCS].

Also, I love the core curriculum. With a passion. :p

^^ Touche. :P

Berkeley
Cornell
Penn
Columbia
Northwestern

i think that’s how its sum up in our country :)

I agree with Prateek’s list above.

prateek92: Berkeley has “problems”? Enlighten me.
