RD Applicants: Interview Advice

Me too. ;-)

I can believe christiansoldier: I’ve interviewed kids that I’ve thought “I’d like to offer them a summer job or for them to see me after graduating from college (even if not Yale)”

Interviewing Yale applicants, I run into some stunningly amazing students. Probably most of you are too. Good luck to you.

heey
i am so happy this thread exists cause I have an important question:
my interviewer “only” went to grad school which is why most of my questions don’t apply to him :frowning:
Of course I have tried to find new ones, but it is kinda difficult :s

I really would appreciate a piece of advice
Thank you so much

Chocolate–Not sure what your question is, but I think it’s that you have questions about the undergrad experience that the interview wouldn’t be able to answer. If you’re just looking for interviewer-filler questions, you can ask about New Haven.

I will opine that I don’t think that people who attended Yale for grad or professional school should do alumni interviews, although I understand some regions are so understaffed that it has to be done. But I’m not in charge, so it doesn’t really matter what I think.

hey AA
thank you for your reply
well…as i reread my post…i kinda realized that i didn’t pose a specific question…sorry

Um…I’m not really looking only for interviewer-filler questions…it’s just that all the questions which are still on my list sound very general…as if i am not interested in yale :frowning:
And i am not really sure what to do about it

to be honest i agree with u AA but i am thankful for getting an interview at all

thanks again :)

Obviously your interviewer will REALIZE that you have undergrad questions, so he/she won’t mind if you have GENERAL questions (you won’t sound disinterested).
Besides, asking questions is a very trivial part of the interview (which is basically just about getting to know YOU).
So, calm down, be yourself, and you’ll be just fine.

I had my interview today, and have a question about thank you notes. Since I only know the interviewers email would it be okay to email a thank you note. OR should I find his address and mail a handwritten note?

Email thank you is fine.

hi, i’ve been reading the posts and the deadline for scea interviews are 12/1? I just got a call today about getting an interview. How is it possible that the interview will be sent in on time?

12/1 is the soft deadline, 12/5 is the hard deadline. There are probably some interviewers who aren’t on top of things and don’t pay attention to the deadlines, but I hope they are outliers.

^Yeah, I’m getting my SCEA interview today. I’m sure it won’t count for SCEA though.

Woah! Good Luck on your interview!

thank you! :D

Hi AdmissionsAddict,
Thanks for all of the information!
I was wondering if it is rude, or reflects poorly if my interviewer asks if I can come to his/her house but I ask them if we can do it elsewhere. My parents and I have talked about this, and they feel uncomfortable having me go to someone else’s house. I just don’t want to come off insulting asking them to reschedule.
Thanks!

First of all, Yale’s handbook for interviewers explicitly says not to have interviews at your house. Obviously, interviewers are not reading their handbooks!

It’s a bit of a hard call because you never know how sensitive the interviewer will be–I’d think most people would understand, but you never know. That being said, if your family is uncomfortable, you should ask for a different location. I’d just say, “Could we meet at the Starbucks on XYZ Street instead?” You’ll need to think about what to say if the interviewer says no. For what it’s worth, it is highly, highly, highly improbable that you would be unsafe going to an interviewer’s house. Your parents could park down the street and wait.

thanks for the advice!

On a humorous note, back in the day before they told interviewers not to interview at their houses, I would interview at my house if an applicant couldn’t make a weekday interview at my office. Every year, at least one set of parents would insist on sitting in the house during the interview. I wasn’t insulted per se, but the implication that I could be a predator or axe murderer was definitely out there.

AA - I really appreciate this thread - it’s answered a lot of my questions so far.

My dad was called two days ago by the area interview coordinator (I wasn’t at home at the time) and started asking a lot of questions from him: SAT scores, AP scores, what other schools I’m applying to. I realize that interviewers aren’t allowed to ask these questions, but I believe I’m doing some sort of pre-interview thing with him in the next few days. Is a pre-interview with a coordinator normal (phone interview)? My dad also mentioned that the coordinator had implied a phone interview with somebody else. Are many interviews done over the phone? Have you had experience with this?

Thank you very much!

I have a friend in an ASC region where the ASC Director does pre-interviews. The pre-interviews in that area are to match people with actual interviewers who have similar academic and/or extracurricular activities. The ASC Director should really, really know better than to ask about scores and what other schools you’re applying to. I’m not suggesting that you complain to Yale about it, but it bothers me when an ASC Director of all people doesn’t know what he’s doing and doesn’t comply with what’s in the ASC handbook. But, the alumni interviewers are a volunteer force and being ASC Director could be a lot of work, so Yale can’t be too picky and, from a practical level, can’t monitor interviewing practices all over the world.

My understanding is that Yale does not allow phone interviews, but I’m too lazy to get online and search the handbook for a citation to that. Maybe T26, who also posts on this thread, or other alumni interviewers can authoritatively answer that part of your question.

Hi AdmissionsAddict -
Application for SCEA got deferred, but never was contacted about an interview. What do you think about emailing area rep to request one? Wondering if it would help for RD. Thanks for info, I’m just discovered this site a day or so ago and so wished I’d seen it earlier.
