RD Applicants: Interview Advice

@Morgan
Sounds like your interview went very well! Good to hear. :)

Mine was okay. I don’t feel like my interviewer and I “clicked” very well. Might have something to do with the fact that I’m more interested in arts and humanities and he’s a doctor? We talked for about 40 minutes…went into how I was studying Chinese history (source materials, texts from mainland China), which was something I didn’t really expect. And he also brought up healthcare reform, which I had fortunately read up on the day before. I do think I left a good impression, even if it wasn’t overwhelmingly impressive. :)

Mine is Saturday. Besides resume, did anyone give anything else?

Mine’s tomorrow! I’ve been planning to wear this certain shirt for so long and now I can’t find it, so that’s disappointing, but I’m trying to remember it doesn’t matter. I think I have a new outfit in my head anyway. I hope my physics tests goes well so I’m not demoralized by it and that Quiz Team goes well, so I’m not feeling down an hour before my interview.

Wow, that is a complete contrast! It was weird; my interviewer pursued the same course of study that I want to do! But sounds good :-)) I was actually going on a wild goose chase in the library (interview place) because I thought I was in the wrong place! Good luck to you!

I have a quick question. My interviewer for UPenn e-mailed me and said he can do the interview on either Feb.3 or Feb.10 (both Wednesdays) at his office. It’s about 3-4 hours away from where I live. Does it make a bad impression or affect my admission chances if I say I can’t go or ask for a phone interview.

ptbdsrj: If UPenn operates like Yale, I’d say contact UPenn and ask them. 3-4 hrs away is ludicrous IMHO. If you were my kid, I wouldn’t let you do that. If there are no closer alums, then I’d let it pass. Pehaps there was a mix up and your name appears on someone’s list when it should be on another?

how was your interview? :)

I guess it’s my turn to post my interview experience.
I got the chance to ask my ASC director why he wanted to join the interview. He said he thought i had a rly unique background so wanted to see me. After I had my 2-people interview, I came out repeating to myself “omg, that was so bad” for ten minutes, but the interviewers were certainly nice. I was just too nervous. Both talked to me equally much, one was a football athlete, one was a young female management consultant; it was slightly mentally tasking thinking up answers that wouldn’t sound weird to either interviewer. And i forgot to pay for my drink. So advice for future interviewees: if you have two completely different interviewers, try to be yourself, actually always be yourself, and try not to sit in an awkward position.

@Vortar: That’s interesting to hear. Yea, the added pressure from getting two interviewers sucks, but I’m sure they didnt mean to make you that nervous. You’ll be fine. Nice name btw.

@T26E4: Thanks for the reply. I don’t think it’s a mix up. Technically it doesn’t seem like a long distance. By car it’s abt an hour away, but my family doesn’t own a car. There’s no direct public transportation route to the meeting place. I have to change a lot of trains and buses so that takes up a long time.

got my interview. gave the guy plenty of substance to write about.

The interview went better than I expected. I’m not a people person so I expected lots of awkwardness, but the interviewer had a bunch of questions and seemed interested in what I had to say, so it went fairly well. Basically I talked about my life, my plans for the future, my hobbies, interests, etc. I think I left a solid impression and a basic “image” of what I was about. Things wrapped up nicely.
I could have explained things more in depth, but oh well…
The interview lasted about 50 minutes.

My interview went great! I think my interviewer really liked me! I brought a copy of my resume and also my two essays that I submitted to Yale (because I said I enjoy creative writing). My interview was 30 minutes and I talked about my passion for spanish since I’ve studied abroad in Spain. We talked about my other passions (science, public speaking, piano, art) and I’m glad I got to say everything I wanted to say (stuff I practiced in the shower haha). I’m really glad this went well since my harvard interview was horrible :(.

my interview was an hour and 20, went by really fast. the guy said he usually gets done in easily less than an hour. i loved my interview.

Does anyone know when will Yale finish all alumni interviews?

I heard it was Feb 15, but I’m not 100% positive. I know Harvard is before the end of January.

jj43912, thanks. Is this info on its website?

I’m actually not sure, someone told me in another thread.

I have my Yale interview in a week. Im the kind of person who is okay at interviews but am not amazing or anything, because no matter how casual they make it, I still get tense. When they ask “talk about yourself” what would interviewers want to hear?

“Talk about yourself” means “tell me about what makes you tick, what you like/dislike, love or hate”. It’s an open ended question. Hopefully it’ll be a vehicle for the interviewer for useful topics to continue discussing.

Being a Yale aspirant, what do *you *think the question means?
