My daughter received her acceptance from Lafayette in the mail today. Basics:

GPA - 3.8 (UW)
SAT I - 1440/2080
SAT II - BIO(M) 740, USH 770, CHEM 730
ECs - Very Good
Recommendation Letters - Excellent
Essay- Excellent from what I hear

We were all very surprised as we did not expect to hear anything on the Regular Decision round until 4/1.

Nah, but I did get my Marquis Scholar letter today (!!!!). Very exciting.

I don't think the other letters are out yet. The letter mentioned the fact that they were writing early to the scholars (March 11).

BTW-- did you notice what a nice, personal letter it was? I loved how they referenced my essay and extra extracurriculars... I wasn't too sure about Lafayette, but that small gesture makes me more interested in attending...

Congratulations insanity90. I didn't actually read the letter until just now. You are right about the letter. Very personal, much more so than the letters she received from the two schools who accepted her EA. It really impressed her and moved Lafayette right into contention as her top choice. She plans to go to the day for accepted students on April 13 and we'll see where this goes.

Congratulations to all those who have received one of Lafayette's merit-based scholarships...that's no small feat!

FYI: Lafayette has made a habit of notifying those applicants receiving a scholarship by mid-March. All other RD applicants will receive decisions no later than April 1st.

For those who received a Marquis Scholarship, there will be two days in the near future (not sure of the exact dates) for you to explore the campus.

I strongly suggest all other accepted students attend the accepted students' day on April 13th. While I can't guarantee the day will "seal the deal," so to speak, it is sure to prove helpful as May 1st draws nearer.

Justin,
First of all, thank you for all of your wonderful posts regarding Lafayette. I have been following your posts for quite a while. My son was thrilled to receive a Marquis Scholarship yesterday! Would you recommend coming to one of the Marquis days or to the regular accepted students' day? We have previously been to Lafayette for the tour and the information session. I would really appreciate your recommendation as my son has a very tough decision to make.

I would recommend attending one of the Marquis days. That way, you won't have to deal with the huge crowds that inevitably characterize our accepted students' day. It should definitely make for a more personal experience, especially since the College does everything but throw out the red carpet for prospective Scholars.

Your son will be able to meet with professors in his area of interest and attend a few classes (assuming those days still fall during the week), all without having to fight for attention with hundreds of other prospective students. Plus, he'll be able to meet with other like-minded Scholars, most of whom will be in a similar predicament of having to select the "best" school from many great choices.

Justin -- What happens when an individual who has been awarded a Marquis or Trustee scholarship decides to attend another college? Is there a "wait list" of students who may be offered the scholarship if a Marquis or Trustee scholar chooses another school or does Lafayette just hold back the scholarship for the next year's awards?

There is no "wait list" of prospective scholarship recipients. We accept more Marquis and Trustee Scholars than we hope enroll, as we anticipate a good number of Scholars passing on our offer. If more pass on the offer than we may have hoped (which has yet to happen since I've been here), the scholarship money is not redistributed.

You'll receive a decision by email around the same time domestic applicants receive their decisions by postal mail (typically the week prior to April 1st). Official decision materials follow shortly thereafter.

You will receive notification by mail NO LATER THAN April 1st. Therefore, decisions are mailed out PRIOR TO April 1st to ensure they arrive in mailboxes BEFORE April 1st.

hudsonvalley51,

Well...a "Good Friday" for some, but not for others. ;-)

I'm glad to hear you'll be attending! Which day (March 31st or April 4th) did you decide on? I'll be leading an 8:15am tour on both days, so maybe we'll see each other then.

Yes, for all you skeptics out there, that means I actually do exist. ;-)
