Re-Applying to Andover Next year:

I got the generic letter from Andover...saying their loss is another school's gain, of course a mass produced generic letter like that will not be personalized to realize that I have no other School..., :P

Anyways venting aside, because they were wonderful with everything else and still left a stunning impression, I want to ask people for advice.

I applied as a sophomore for Upper Year, but understandably this is the hardest grade to get into....but I am strongly considering applying as a repeat Upper next year, would it be worth it? Or better said, anyone have a better way to try and spend 2 years in Andover?

I would really love to get in for various reasons, but most notably, it has amazing math and physics courses. I hope to be finished with MultiVariable Calculus, Linear Algebra and Differential Equations before I would enter Andover should I apply...I am going to apply to Exeter and Lawrenceville, but I cannot emphasis enough that I need virtually full scholarship.

I have a very strong political side, so I am not a completely narrow minded applicant... advice on what to do?

I was rejected from Andover too, despite the fact that I have extended family attending. I think they must have had a killer applicant pool this year, because I haven’t seen too many acceptances.

I suggest you reapply next year, and expand your list of schools a bit. In the mean time you can look into some pre-college programs that Exie was posting about, and/or take summer courses at CTY/TIP/etc.

I am going to do Ross Summer Math Program, but year round will do a combo of EPGY, CTY (online), Math Circle, AoPS, Math Zoom and Pushkin Academy.

But again if i re-apply next year it’s the same competitive 19 seats or so, and I am not going to increase my chances by much…so any other BS’s that I should apply to?

Kunatah, you sound like an amazing student. It might be time to look beyond high school and start thinking about the incredible opportunities you will have for college.

Definately apply to a wide variety of schools. No matter how good of a canidate you are, it all is just dependent on what that school is looking for that year, whether that means they want to fill a slot from a state or country so they can look more diverse, or whatever.

Andover is obviously a top school. If you want to attempt other top schools, you could try the obvious HADES (Hotchkiss, andover, deerfield, exeter, st pauls) Hotchkiss and deerfield are more rural.
Also, Choate rosemary hall is a really good school as well.
Just apply to more would be my biggest recommendation, get really good grades as well as get even more involved in extracurriculars, DO COMMUNITY SERVICE, and start the application process early next year. You know how it is now and how competitive it, and have an advantage over first year applyers. Best of luck! I was in the same position as you this year except after a lot of debating, I chose to apply repeat sophomore.

Choate, Deerfield, Hotchkiss, St. Pauls, and Groton are the rest of the “big-name” schools. I’ve heard good things about Kent, though I don’t know much about it.

Since you said you had outstanding ECs, if you do really well grades-wise next year (I read on another thread you started your grades were not that great), I think you would have a pretty good chance.

AoPS sounds really cool. I’m trying to get my mom to pay for a class. I think all those application fees traumatized her. lol

Hmmmm, I am going to apply to college as well, I am looking at colleges like Harvard, MIT, Waterloo, UofC, CMU, CalTech etc… and if I get into one of these with decent F/A then I will sidestep Andover…otherwise I hope Andover or Exeter, Choate Rosemary (thank you for reminding me), Lawrenceville seem like good alternatives.

I wouldn’t necessarily want Hotchkiss, which is somewhat “too” preppy for me, and more of a foreign relations than math and science oriented school.

Thank you for your comments, they are really helpful.

I applied to Andover last year for Freshman year as a day student. Did not get accepted. Andover was the only school I applied to too. This year I reapplied abd applied to 3 other schools as well. I got waitlisted to Andover thid year, but got accepted into Choate. I would suggest reapplying to More schools and and submitting a cd or piece of art
