I received a score of 790 in the writing section of the SAT with no error in the MC part and 9 essay. If both readers had scored my essay 5 each, then I would have received 800 for the writing section.
For many, this is no big deal, but for me this makes the difference between a 2390 and a 2400 and it is quite frustrating.
I checked the CB website to find out if there was a way to appeal the essay score and have it re-scored, but could only find information about score verification which does not include re-reading the essay.
Does such an appeal process exist ?

No, and no college will care if you get a 2390 versus 2400. NO college.

^^^^^
truth

Both of the above are true. When you’re at that level, it doesn’t matter.
Also, the essay is scored from 2-12, not 10. So if the 2 readers scored 5 each, you still would have fallen short of the maximum of 12.
Congrats on a great score!

@junhug and amarkov: It is not for the colleges, but for my personal satisfaction.

@my2: the SAT curve for this test was such as 10 essay+no MC error gave 2400.

I doubt you could get it rescored. I hate being the “counselor” like this, but I think it’s just best if you stop caring about it. It isn’t healthy worrying about stuff like that; I have OCD…I had to deal with something like this. Not saying you are (I don’t even know you lol), but I’m just throwing something out there.

Place a call to CB and ask them if there is an appeal process. Then you’ll know your answer for sure

They won’t rescore the essay. I understand how this could be very frustrating, though.

Worst case scenario they rescore your essay and you get less than a 9…

@junhug: what is OCD ?

I did call CB and they immediately offered their score verification service and were eager to charge 50$ for that. The person I talked to didn’t know this service did not include rescoring and she had to put me on hold to check when I objected. So the information on rescoring is obviously not mastered even by the CB reps, but does this mean I cannot appeal?
I know, I shouldn’t care as I have a great score. I wouldn’t bother if my score was due to MC errors but a discrepancy between two readers is really frustrating.

@Ali: I actually do not care if the rescoring leads to a lower score because even if my overall score drops to, say, 2360, I think it would look exactly the same as a 2390. But 2400 is just something different: a class of its own.

^ It wont drop to a lower score, if your essay score is lowered, then you will simply get your original score. You really have nothing to lose. I would appeal.

luceverita: OCD is an acronym for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder ([Obsessive?compulsive disorder - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Obsessive–compulsive disorder - Wikipedia)).

^ There is nothing obsessive about wanting a 2400, especially after coming so close.

Call up CB again and speak with a supervisor. Of course they will charge you; why should they do it for free? Isn’t it worth $50 for a possible 2400?

Thanks for the suggestion: I will ask to talk to a supervisor. Of course I am willing to pay, I just want to know how to appeal.

I called CB again. The answer is clear: CB will not re-score an essay under normal circumstances because the essay is scored by two people and a discrepancy of 1 point is considered normal. if the score from reader 1 to reader 2 differs by 2 or more points, then a third reader would score the essay.
I guess, I have to accept the verdict

^Or if you really want that 2400, you could always take the test again and maybe perfect your essays meanwhile.

a 2400 looks substantially better than a 2390, what are you on? Its like the difference between a 790 and a 800, an 800 means you ability is above and beyond the maximum the test offers, while a 790 limits your ability to just 790.

Edit: Everyone that says trying to obtain a 2400 is “OCD” is ignorant, different people have different goals.

what is “perfect” as far as SAT essay is concerned? I showed my essay to my english teacher and he thinks he would have graded it close to perfect. Obviously the grading criteria for a SAT essay differ from the grading criteria for a “normal” english class essay.
I will not retake, because that would indeed show obsession.
