Had some personal issues this past quarter and ended up with a D+ in MATH 143. Is there any benefit to taking the class again at a local CC this summer for a better grade? Have checked the ASSIST web site to verify the class would transfer. Anybody have any experience with this before? Thanks …

You get about 15 units of grade forgiveness where your old grade is COMPLETELY replaced by your retake grade, if your retake score is higher. After you “spend” your 15 units of grade-forgiveness, you get about 15 more where your previous and retake grades are averaged. You need a C- or lower to qualify for retake. I don’t know what happens once you spend all your retake units.

I’m not sure whether CC classes count toward grade forgiveness. You’ll have to call and ask. But I do know that CC classes are omitted from your Cal Poly GPA (it’s put into your “higher ed” GPA instead). Honestly, you won’t be applying Calc III material too often in your engineering courses, at least not as much as the material taught in I, II, and IV. You’re an engineer, right?

It looks like they will average the grades in your cumulative GPA if you take the class again at a CC. Thanks for the info, and yes - engineering, and I’ve heard the same thing about Calc III.

[Repeating a Course - Office of the Registrar - Cal Poly](http://www.ess.calpoly.edu/_records/registration/repeats.html)

According to your link, it didnt say a CC course would count as a repeated course (in order to improve the CP grade on the first course). It seemed to say the repeated course needs to be taken at CP? Id suggest you visit or call CP Engineering Advising and ask before taking the CC course, just to get a few more facts before deciding. If youve already confirmed things with Engineering Advising, thats great. Glad you are moving forward and improving your situation.

Yes - I emailed eadvise and got a reply in less than a day. Taking the class again at CP will replace the grade but will still show up on the transcript. Thanks!

Yeah the class at CC will definitely useful for you what you have yo do is to focus on your studies and do lots of practice because practice makes a man perfect.Do regular exercise of maths daily and make short notes for formulas and read it again and again.Your grades will definitely improve.

I wouldn’t recommend retaking Math 143 unless it’s crucial to your major for whatever reason. It’s easily the hardest of the Calculus series here, and it’s more or less and introduction to what you do in 241 and your core engineering courses. You’ll pretty much relearn vectors in 241 because you need to do so much 3D work in them. And 241 actually has a flow, unlike 143! It’s not just a jumble of crap anymore :D

In short, I wouldn’t retake it unless it really tanks your GPA, especially if you’re looking at AP or towards the 4+1 program.

So then if you fail a few classes in community college ( i never dropped them so I got F’s) and you retake them and get an “A” they just combine the two for a “C” average? Or is it different for F’s? If they just average them I’m screwed and I’ll never get in to engineering…
