REA Class of 2018 Applicants' Discussion Thread

My parents are supportive because they want a reason to visit California every couple of months

@brogrammer17
Yeah no support whatsoever, I cut them out of the process. It’s not because they don’t support me academically it’s just that realistically they much rather want me to go to a city school where I could get a full ride so I could live at home and not have them pay a dime. It’s all about the Benjamin’s

I’m not sure why people keep saying the 16th. The latest they can release it is the 15th if you go off of their website. There’s no need for them to extend that…even with Hurricane Sandy extending the app deadline about a week last year, Stanford still got decisions out on the 14th (Friday).

I read that financial aid packages will be revealed on the 13th so doesn’t that mean decisions will be released on the 13th?

I don’t see why the Nov 4 extension would delay decisions. Nov 1 was a Friday. They dont work on the weekends so extending the deadline to Monday at midnight delayed them one work day and I’m a sure they already had enough applications by that point to start on.

@quotable
Exactly

My Dad never believed I could get in, so he laughs whenever I bring that up…

The letter looks good already. I really like the idea. man, don’t people on the forum all deserve Stanford for who they are.

@hotspurs, based on my research and findings, they will releaseo nline on the 15th not the 13th…while that may mean that admission we will find out earlier and fin aid not till the 15th, but i don’t get where u got the 13th for fin aid…the website clearly says 15th and has no "approximate’ or “estimate” notation…

What time do the results come out on 15th? Best of luck everyone, I really hope I get in. Its my dream school.

Damn.

I just re-read all my essays for the first time.

What was I thinking!?!? They’re terrible. BAHHHHHH

shakes with nerves

@matrixsurgeon I read that financial aid will be revealed on the 13th on the financial aid section of Stanford University.
[Financial Aid : Stanford University](<a href=“Financial Aid : Stanford University”>Financial Aid : Stanford University)
it says Award letters issued to on-time Restrictive Early Action applicants (approximate time) so I thought that it might be the 13th. Not sure though

@jeanperrin, it’s okay. If it makes you feel better, I found out on Stanford’s website that my admissions officer is the assistant director for diversity outreach and the Native American outreach coordinator.
And I’m Asian.
with a 31 on my ACT…and not to mention my terrible EIGHTH GRADE photo on my transcript.

BAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

My husband and I are supportive of our son. He actually is a very calm person but I am not. I am anxiously waiting for Dec 13th while he said he didn’t want even to think about it so that in case of rejection not to suffer from broken heart. Oh well, I do understand him but can’t calm myself down. Stanford, o Stanford, what are you planning to do to us? :)

Btw, is a research internship considered a hook? Do you guys know?

It’s definitely a plus, but it depends on a lot of factors, like how independently you worked, what was the quality of the work, etc. Something like RSI is definitely a huge plus, while minor work in a family friend’s lab won’t affect anything. Does anyone know how math/science olympiads are looked at by admissions people?

^Thanks! I did independent work on spinal cord research at caltech ( in a family friend’s lab). I’m just trying to think of other possible hooks I might have, besides being an URM.

Sophus: Really I think it depends on how well you did. That said, I’ve seen a lot of chance threads in my day, and that was a pretty common activity :(

Hmm that’s really interesting and probably combined is a big hook. And I know exactly how you feel. I’m a URM USAMO qualifier and I want to know how much of an advantage that provides.

On that note, I’ve done two independent research projects with my school (both projects were ~70 hrs, nothing published, everything was done independently).

It’s not quite research in the familiar sense: both were music research projects and I used primary and secondary sources in addition to actual research. Doing these projects gave me AP weight for my music class.

Anyone else’s school do this? Does anyone know if it has any bearing on the decision?
