I keep stressing over my application, namely the parts where I said I participated in competitions and won awards, without specifying exactly the name of the competition. I didn’t put them because the sites were gaming websites that would make me look really bad (MMOs players are the bane of any campus’s existence). The thing I did was separate from that, and I was actually programming games in JavaScript, but still.

And I feel really really bad for putting them as International competitions on the common app. Technically they were, since there were people submitting from Europe and stuff, but there were only like 10 submissions total, and putting “international” sounds like I’m implying my award from a random internet community is on the same level as International Olympiads.

I did the same thing for music (the #1 activity on my app) too. I said participated in an EDM contest, even though I placed like last in it.

Ugh. I went back and specified on my current apps, but I hope I didn’t screw myself over for Stanford. I’m pretty sure I won’t get in, since Stanford, but I’ll be happy to take a spot at MIT.

Okay, more realistically, a UC.

Here’s to at least 1 person from CC getting in to Stanford and making us all proud.

^ Which MMO’s do you play?
JavaScript is a lot like Matlab, no?

You produce EDM too? Haha I thought I was fairly unique in that respect and ended up writing my common app essay on it but I guess not! I’ve entered a few competitions as well but lost all of them so I decided to focus on why I enjoy producing rather than trying to sound like I’m good at it, since in all honesty the stuff I’ve made kinda sucks.

Also, judging from your name, I take it you are a fan of the xx? :)

No idea what MatLab is. The only programming languages I know are Python and JavaScript (I feel like I’ll be behind as a CS major).

And I haven’t played MMOs for 2 years now, I’ve just stayed a pretty cool forum that does a lot of stuff besides the game itself.

And awesome, another EDM guy/gal! For the record, I’m an absolute amateur, but this is something I’m really keen on doing. I plan to take my (lack of skills) to college and beyond. I am a fan of the xx, and I entirely concur with your philosophy on production. I used to try to do genres, but then I realized that I’ll never get anywhere emulating other people’s sound. Now my stuff is eclectic-ish and all. But still boring. Working on that (sidechaining in particular works wonders).

My common app essay was not on EDM production itself (cuz lol 650 on my songs), but on my failure to become the ASB school DJ. Deep stuff, man.

Unfortunately, with college apps and school I haven’t had any time to start any new tracks. Although rest assured, one day I hope to be a producer at least a tenth as good as Madeon.

@BairnOwl I think we’re just listing the people who have applied SCEA to Stanford.

I’ve been doing it for almost four years and I’m still an amateur haha! That’s what I love about it though, you can’t ever reach a point where you stop learning new tricks to make cool sounds. The weird and experimental stuff is the best type of electronic music for sure though. It gets boring listening to a thousand 4x4 house songs and all of this “filthy” dubstep. I’ve been listening to the xx a ton lately, I really love the minimal style that they use. Sidechaining is awesome. One of the first songs I made is lovingly entitled “SIDECHAIN EVERYTHING”

Definitely know how you feel about not having any time to make full tracks. On a good day, I get to pop into ableton live for a bit and screw around with some sounds. If we both get accepted we should do a collab next fall!

Speaking of EDM, I just purchased a pass for EDC today, so I have that to look forward to if this whole thing with Stanford doesn’t work out

I’m super into electronic music, but I’ll fight you to the death if you lump it all into the label “EDM.” That’s like calling all rock music “GSM” for guitar-made sex music.

Anyway, favorite artists in no particular order: Rockwell, Joe Ford, Skream, Mala, Billain, XXYYXX, Machinedrum, SpectraSoul, Chemical Brothers, Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Autechre, Phace, Noisia, Secede.

I’ll pretty much love you if you’re into any of these artists, and I’ll make you love all of these artists if you’re my roommate.
