I’m a current junior from a private Catholic high school in the Chicago suburbs. I need some reach schools to apply to.
I’m looking at University of Illinois, Indiana University, Miami University (Ohio), and Ohio State for business.
I must stay in the Midwest, and I am looking for some good reach schools with a strong business program. I know Notre Dame has a great business program, but I really don’t like it and I don’t want to go there.
Here are my stats:
-3.9W GPA (freshman year)
-89W GPA (soph/junior year… I transferred)
-29 ACT (retook in April, waiting to get those scores, I’m expecting in the 30’s)
-Varsity Track (2 years)
-Cross Country (2 years)
-Founder and moderator of my school’s ski club
-Choir (school and mass, 3 years)
-Piano (recreational, 12 years by the time I graduate)
-Community Theatre (acting, set construction, lights, etc. 8 summers)
-School Theatre (set construction, crew-2 seasons)
-applying for a position on school newspaper
-other EC’s that I’m not listing here
-most challenging courses available to me
Hmm… My friend went to Iowa State and really likes the honors college.
I wish I knew more Midwestern schools! The University of Michigan–Ann Arbor is a “public ivy,” though I don’t know what you’d get aid-wise, being out of state.
@intparent I don’t really care if it’s pre admit. I had some personal issues sophomore year that caused my GPA to drop (I had a 92 average first semester of junior year, and I think I’m at a 93 now), and I know that with my grades will continue on through college. I talked to a Kelley rep about my situation, and she said that Kelley will try to work through with it, especially if I meet the ACT superscore requirement (which I exceed) and continue showing good school work. I’ll check out UMN, thanks
I think you should care you are pre-admit any place that does it. It is quite competitive at most schools that offer pre-admit to get one of the later slots, and you are screwed if you don’t get in. You either have to pick a new major or transfer. I sure wouldn’t rely on “Kelley will try to work through it”. Go to a college where you can get into your preferred major from the start. Don’t gamble that you will get one of those later slots.
Try the supermatch function to the left (under find a college). Get your hands on some good college guide books (ex. Fiske, Princeton Review) and start researching.
@intparent in order to make it into Kelley business, I just need to maintain a 3.5 GPA. I’ve done my research. Also, if I have to switch my major, it won’t be the end of my life. I have another plan if I don’t get admitted to the business program. I don’t intend on being in business my entire life. I will probably end up going to law school after graduation.
@whenhen a lot of my classmates will end up going there, either for long weekends or for school. My current high school is a LOT like ND, so I don’t really want to go there. My parents want me to stay in the Midwest, and my first choice major is in the field of business. I also want to go to a school that has total enrollment <15,000/
@happy1 I haven’t had much luck with the super match, but I will totally check out the guide books!
A 3.5 is not the cakewalk you may think it is in college, especially in classes where other students are also taking the Kelley admission requirements and hoping to be admitted.
@intparent I really suggest that you don’t tell me what’s easy and what’s not. You don’t know me, my background, anything. I think that is for my parents, my counselors, my teachers, and myself to decide. Not you. Like I said, I talked to Kelley about my situation. It’s extremely unique and is very impactful on my upbringing. If I were to take out that one year of hell that I was put through, my GPA would be significantly higher, thus granting me access into Kelley Direct. I don’t appreciate you telling me what I can and cannot do, especially since you are the last person who should be planning my life.
I am just trying to tell you that it is never a good idea to go to a college where you aren’t sure if you have admission to your major. If Kelley admissions was so sure you were going to get in, they would have pre-admitted you to start with. Lots of students think they will get in applying later, but don’t make it. And with no guaranteed admission, what if the person you talked to leaves next year?
You have not been to college yet, you don’t know how it will go. Your current ACT and soph/jr HS grades don’t shout that you can expect a 3.5 or better freshman GPA, either. And the fact that you think ND is an option with your stats (you just “don’t like it”) tells me that you don’t have a good sense of admissions possibilities, or how difficult college is.
Kelley only has a 33% acceptance rate. That’s quite risky, if you’re not a pre-admit.
I don’t think Notre Dame is an option, either. Your GPA & ACT are very far below the 25th percentile.
I don’t know if this is intended, but you’re coming off as rude. Not one, but all of my high school years have been dreadful, so I do understand. But, you do need to be realistic about your options.
College Confidential isn’t a career, people are voluntarily trying to help you. You should at least give them respect!
@newjerseygirl98 I honestly did not mean to come off as rude, but I really do think I know myself better than you guys do. As mentioned earlier, I have a backup plan if I don’t get into the business school. One of the main factors that I want to do business is because that’s what my mom does. It really won’t be the end of the world if I don’t make it.
If I wanted to make ND, I could, just based off of connections that I have with them.
I’m sorry that your high school years have been bad. However, my problems are mine, and I don’t think you should try to downplay them, especially since you don’t know what they are. As soon as someone even mentions my first two years of high school, I break down sobbing. Same thing with my first, second, and third grade years. I talked to my counselors at school about it, and when I was done, they were crying too. Hell, I’m crying just writing about it. I don’t want to share it publicly on here, so I apologize for being so vague.
If you think we don’t understand, I’m not sure why you’re asking for advice…
I’m not downplaying anything. Unless you were chronically ill, or had a parent die, colleges won’t excuse you.
I was homeless, and Temple rejected me with a GPA .1 below average.
I’m just saying…don’t expect colleges to feel bad for you, when your GPA & scores are near the 1% percentile.
You are fine musiclover131. Congrats on surviving life and being successful. Good job taking the initiative to look for more options.
Depaul has a good Business program with access to good internships. Minnesota could work. Apply in the summer. Creighton University maybe. Gustavus Adolphus ? Ask for information now from any school you may possibly have an interest in. Hit some college fairs. Start lining up your recommendations from teachers, counselors or community members to build your case. Just build in some safeties too. You probably already did. Good luck. Go see some schools now if you can.
@MaroonDaddy I want to go to DePaul, but my mom said that she doesn’t want me going there. She isn’t comfortable with me going to a school in the middle of (literally) of a city. She understands that they have a great program, but she worries about my safety. Understandable. I’m 5’2 and I’m under 100lbs and I have no city smarts whatsoever. I plan on sitting down August 1st and filling out ALL of my apps I will definitely check out UMinn and go check out some fairs. There are quite a few in my area within a few weeks. Thanks!
