Reading

Reading is fun. Unfortunately, I can't really seem to get myself in the habit again for the last 8 months.

I try to read every day, even if it's just rereading a good part from a book I've read several times already (like The Bourne Identity or Catch-22 or The Runaway Jury or any of my Dean Koontz novels). I'm just starting The Awakening by Chopin, and I have to read Heart of Darkness by Conrad for a test tomorrow in AP Lit (yes, we have a test two days before the AP Exam).

I read but not everyday. Unlike taking the traditional approach, I read more excerpts, articles, and short stories than full books. Unless the books are good reads, I prefer not to slog away at long exhaustive literature. I appreciate the grandeur of Hawthorne and other such writers, but my personal taste in books lies for reads that are vivid, captivating, enlightened yet brisk and simple, like a beautiful stream.

My friends think it's an odd thing when they see me reading for fun. They do not understand that I read more for enlightenment than for pleasure, more for ideas than for laughs. They may never understand, but that's okay.

I had more of an appetite for books as a youngster. As I grew, my tastes in books grew and became more selective. I read less books, now, but they have the same effects on me as they did when I was younger. I still enjoy them. :)
