Okay, I'm a trumpet player and senior this year, and I plan on majoring in music ed. I'm at an all-state level if it's any gauge of my potential. (bear in mind, Louisiana all-state, so not that great) Right now some of my major considerations are University of Houston, UNT, and Furman University...among tons of others. If anyone could give suggestions for schools to look into, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Edit: Also, finances and location are not an issue.

Where do you think you might want to teach? It’s usually good to get a music education degree in the state in which you plan to teach. Most states have public universities that have good music education programs.

I would really love to teach in Texas. I think I would definitely fare well at UH, but UNT obviously offers a more prestigious music school…however, the rigor of the competition there kind of frightens me.

We’ve lived in the Houston area for 20 years and my daughter has been studying trumpet with Jim Vassallo at UH through HS and has loved it! He’s an excellent player and a great guy. Her current band director and many of his colleagues are UH Music Ed grads - it really seems to be a consistently strong program and a primary focus of the Moores school. The UH campus is so-so overall, but the music facilities are pretty good, especially the performance hall.
