Really cannot find a definitive answer.

Hello,

I called Berkeley, three times about this question, but I got a different answer every single time.

I am a prospective junior transfer applicant to UC Berkeley (MCB major) for the Fall 2012 semester. Right now, I am at the University of Miami, my current GPA being a 3.75 w/ 46 credits (61 pending).

From the Berkeley transfer PDF, it states that this is one of the things they look at for a decision: "Completion of freshman/sophomore prerequisite courses for the intended major
and/or college breadth requirement"

The first time I called Berkeley, the representative told me that "major pre-reqs are what we look at, the 7-course breadth requirement are classes I have to take before I graduate from L&S."

The second time I called Berkeley, the representative told me "since many colleges don't offer the major pre-reqs, you can complete the majority of the pre-reqs here, so we look to see how far you've progressed in the 7-course breadth requirement"

Obviously, these are two different answers, so I would like to know WHICH IS IT? For my decision, will Berkeley look at my major pre-reqs completed, or how far I've completed the 7 course breadth requirement?

On the Berkeley MCB transfer page, it states: "MCB accepts transferable coursework from most accredited colleges and universities. Students hoping to transfer to UC Berkeley with the intention of declaring MCB should plan to complete all lower division prerequisite courses at their transfer institution. Failure to complete the lower division requirements prior to enrolling at UC Berkeley may impact your admission to the University."

By the end of this semester (Spring 2012), I will have completed all the required major pre-reqs to declare this major.

I would like to know, are my chances better with ALL the required major pre-reqs completed for MCB, or are my chances lowered because I have only completed around 3, 4, or 5 (not really sure how much) out of the 7 breadth courses required for graduation from L&S?

Sorry, if this post makes it seem like I sound ****ed, I'm just a little annoyed, and I thank you for helping me out.

no, they don’t conflict with each other.

You have to finish 7breadth and major course in order to GRADUATE. But they don’t know if your class you can articulate to Berkeley’s courses before they see your transcript and your school catalog (which is after they make their decision) and some General Education class can be really different. However, most of the science classes, even worldwide, are very similar, so they can be easily transfered.
----- They say ““major pre-reqs are what we look at, the 7-course breadth requirement are classes I have to take before I graduate from L&S””.

Which means they want you to finish your major classes, but don’t really care about your 7breadth.

Also, two of the seven course breadth are biological sciences and physical sciences, which will automatically be covered by the major requirements for MCB (biology and chemistry/physics). The others are art and literature, historical studies, international studies, philosophy and values, and social and behavioral sciences.

Alright cool, thanks for the responses guys.

One more question…do any of you happen to know if a 3.75 is a “good enough” transfer GPA for MCB?

not to hijack the thread or anything, but does anyone know what to do if your school gives you two separate grades from Chemistry - One for Lab and the other for lecture. I got an A for lecture and B for Lab. So would i put my A in Lectures under the box designated for “Physical Science without Lab” and put the B i got in lab for the designated box “Physical Science with Lab”?? Super confused, i don’t know what to do.

Welcome to the world of no-straight-answers … try calling 5 times and getting 4 different answers. I really feel your pain. But I digress.

You have to complete both the major prereqs AND the breadth requirement. Major prereqs are what admission evaluation is based on, but the completion of breadth requirement is what makes you ELIGIBLE for admission consideration.
