I have no clue what "Breadth" courses are, but I've been hearing I need to take 7 in order to transfer into Berkeley's College of Letters and Science, specifically; my major is political science.

Sorry if my question sounds stupid, but what exactly are Breadth courses and are they a major requirement for transfer applicants? I've looked up many sources and they all have different answers. Up until now, I was just worrying about finishing IGETC and Pre-reqs, but Breadth courses never came to mind.

Not a stupid question at all; I’m starting Berkeley in the fall and don’t have any idea what breadth courses are either. My guess is that “breadth” refers to either 7 prereqs you need for your major, or general lower division requirements (such as English courses, math course, science with lab, etc.).

If it’s prereqs, I’m sure you know to go to Assist.org to find the equivalencies at the school you’re currently attending. If it’s just the lowerdivision classes you need to take, you’ll fulfill this if you complete IGETC at a community college, or something similar elsewhere.

I transferred into L&S and never once worried about this. Just do your prereqs and complete IGETC/something similar.

yeah, i never heard about it either as a transfer student so i’m assuming the only people who have to worry about it are those who were already admitted to berkeley as freshmen

The L&S College request of breadth courses means just that; something more inclusive aside your major studies. Meaning, breadth does not refer to prerequisites to your major, rather courses that cover a more wider spectrum of education. You need not worry, as IGETC fulfills this requirement for most L&S majors, and as I have checked yours as well.
