Hey everyone.
Im currently a freshman at Boston University, but really would like to transfer. I simply am not happy here.

Im originally from Long Island, NY and am planning on applying to Columbia, Penn, Brown and NYU as a transfer.

NYU is without a doubt my top pick.
That being said, I have a couple questions.
1.) Would it be more logical to apply for spring '10? From what I hear, It is easier to gain admittance into CAS for the spring semester. This also could save a little bit of money.
2.) If I were to apply to NYU for the fall '09 and were to get rejected, could I apply for the following spring?
3.)Once I complete one full year of school here at BU, is my college resume given more consideration than my high school record?

Stats.
From Long Island, NY.
First Generation
98.6 Weighted GPA in High School
7 AP's
29 ACT
Very Good EC's

*I actually was accepted to NYU's GSP program but had to decline because BU gave me a full scholarship.

After one semester at BU
-3.53 GPA (18 Credits)
-Dean's List
-President's Host
-Lead Baritone Sax in Concert Band
-Lead Alto Sax in Honors Combo
-Alto Sax in BU Big Band
-Stage Troupe Theatre Group
-Intramural Soccer Captain

After this semester, I think I can raise my GPA to a 3.6-3.7 possibly. If not, I don't see it dropping below what I currently have.
That being said, can I get into CAS for the Fall '09?
Or should I try to boost my GPA and apply for Spring '10.

Im just really unhappy here and I'd appreciate any input guys.

a bit surprising you didnt get into cas for freshman admissions...but if you werent accepted to cas the first time around, a 3.5 your only semester at BU might well not be enough to get you in. You cannot apply for xfer two semesters in a row, you must wait a year for re-applying...i would wait apply for spring 09 and try to raise it to 3.7 like you said...what is your major? try and get a really well defined passion or interest, assuming that music is not what you plan to study which i assume you dont if your applying to cas

applying to columbia, brown, upenn with a 3.5 probably isnt even worth it

You're giving up a full scholarship at BU for NYU? Wow, that must be hard! I'd have to agree with Duffle about the ivies, and since NYU is your first choice those apps probably make no sense anyway because no way you're getting into one of the ivies and not NYU.

I would apply sooner rather than later, I think this economy will force lots of kids out on NYU in the Fall.

Yeah, the ivy's I'm honestly not really worried about.
I was thinking about the economy and everything, but unfortunately it will have a direct effect on me at the same time....

That being said, I'm working really hard this semester and think i can get to a 3.6ish. Possibly even a 3.7.

If i were to wait until spring '10, wouldn't my high school resume be given less consideration as well? Like I wouldn't have to send my ACT results right?

If I were to stay at a 3.53 say, could I get in?

you could maybe because of the economy...however as an nyu student myself, i havent seen or heard of anyone leaving because of it...maybe because im insulated, maybe there is a strong element of truth to it. im still unsure as to why you didnt get in for freshman admissions? i guess its your act score perhaps...but i assume that there is a reason that you werent accepted for freshman admissions, and a 3.5 your first semester at BU isnt going to compensate much for it. your hs record is given less consideration as you go on...usually if you have taken the sat/act in the past they like to see them, i think they might be required if you have taken them in the past but definantly double check on that...with a 3.53 you have a better chance getting in now than if your gpa is unchanged next semester...nyu is known to be terrible in giving out financial aid, especially for transfers and in this economy im sure it cant be much better than it usually is...be very, very sure that you absolutely and totally want to be at nyu because you are essentially going to be giving up 150k to attend a school that is probably slightly better than BU, but certainly not on a whole different level, especially in the eyes of future employers

Where exactly is the money going to come from for you to attend another school? You may want to consider staying put for a second year just because of the finance issue.

if BU is giving you a full ride, then you should just stick it out, unless you really want to take out 200k for NYU. cause with the economy the way it is. You never know how long it will take you to pay it back.

i have to agree with pop89-if i were you i would just stick it out at BU cause of the free ride and NYU is known to give horrific financial aid.

again, your college gpa is a bit lower than the normal accepted gpa to cas. certainly won't put you out of the running especially with your hs grades, but you certainly have some work to do to prove to nyu that you are a better applicant now with a 3.5 at BU than the one that wasnt accepted to CAS as a freshman

the claim of grade deflation is made by a number of people at a number of schools, bu certainly being one of them, but from what i have seen there is little, if anything to it. no school is "known" to the lay person, or for that matter even admissions officials, for having grade deflation. grade inflation seems to be a bit different story however
