Really stressed over my qualifications for SMU, UTD, UT austin

Im a sophomore student in Allen high school and recently got ranked in the top 25% (427 of 1648) and the GPA was calculated based on my Grades from freshman year and 1st semester of sophomore year. im currently am enrolled in AP World history and pre-ap classes. Will i have a chance of admission to UTD, SMU, UT Austin? Is there time left for room for improvement.

UT Austin is going to hard. Not impossible though, if you try hard your junior year and also score high on sat/act you have a good chance. Also your major matters a lot.

UTD should be fine as long as you get a high test score, they have pretty high standardized test score averages (mostly because of the scholarships they give to them)

Can’t say much about SMU

However there are other good schools in Texas. You have Texas A&M that you would have a good chance at if you score high on standardized tests (although it might not be for you), U of H has a great honors program, and the school itself is not too bad without honors. Baylor is good, but it is pretty expensive. Texas tech much be a nice option too.

As a senior who just got capped from their favorite Texas school (UT-Austin), I can tell you a lot of kids who seem really qualified do get capped or rejected from UT if they are not top 6%. No one at my school (1k+ kids) that wasn’t auto got into UT if they applied for business or engineering. That’s just to say that if you are not auto, UT is very competitive and you have to try really hard to get in.

My DD was admintted to UTD, UT and SMU this year. She is in top 10%, 4.49, and 32 ACT. Having the grades helped, and being in top 10% (which you can attain) but I think the ECs play a big part also to set her up for a good resume. In my reading, the want students that have experienced leadership and community involvement.
She is in student government (very big deal imho) and also took opportunities to do things to fill out her resume. You don’t have to go on Missionary trips or build houses for habitat for humanities (of course it would not hurt). She did things like help out with special olympics getting them setup and getting the kids organized for events, so that is ‘event coordinator’, helped out at concession stand ‘managed money, mantained stock levels, customer interaction’, choir president (lots of stuff for that) etc
One thing she did not do that we had thought about was chartering a club. Pick something you like and get a teacher sponsor and you can start a club.

^ Having a lot of community involvement and leadership on your resume will really help. What major are you aiming for? That really impacts your admittance to UT cause there are some extremely competitive majors at UT that even valedictorians get rejected from.

There’s nothing to stress over. There are a lot of universities to choose from in Texas. Go be a teenager and hang out with friends!

Honestly, your chances for getting into ANY college, not just these colleges, are going to be hard to predict. You are a second semester sophomore, and that means you still have half of high school to go. My tips are to get more involved in extracurriculars (if you aren’t already) and do well on your SAT/ACT tests. Your class rank is fine for any of these colleges right now, and it looks like you will have a good chance if you keep improving. I have recently been accepted into UT Austin while only being in the top 50% of my school. However, what saved me was my ACT score of 33, which is in the top 97th percentile. What it really comes down to in the end is how you present yourself to colleges in your written material and history, which for you isn’t even fully set in stone yet. Don’t stress out about this too much and continue enjoying high school while it lasts!
