Reasons for getting wait listed?

HI I don't want to sound stuck-up or anything, but I was actually very surprised to see myself wait listed at UCLA. Nevertheless, I never saw UCLA as a safety (haha), but my GC told me to look at it as a low match.
Here are the things that I provided on my app:
Objective:
770 math, 720 writing, 690 CR (2180) SAT
33 ACT (33 science, 32 reading, 35 math, 33 English, 9 on writing)
SAT subjects: 770 math and bio, 700 chem
GPA: 4.46 UC WGPA, 3.97 UW
ELC
APs: Bio (4), Physics mechanics C (4), English language (5)
Senior year: 4 APs, one honors and one regular (APs are chem, english, calc, and gov) received A's in all for first semester
Subjective:
Stanford summer program for course credit
Leadership positions at various community service, as well as at an honor society
piano for four years-selftaught (my second essay was about this)
200 hours of CC
(I could go into more detail for my ECs, but I don't really feel like it :) )

Circumstances: ESL student who moved to the US in eighth grade. Had to deal with learning English while trying to compete in a very competitive public magnet. That was what my personal statement was about.

The reason why I think I was wait listed: I declared molecular bio as my first major and physiology as my second. Both are very competitive.

I see so many people that have lower stats getting in (no offense). I was just wondering where I went wrong.

Oh I am also from California, with an income bracket of 65K

anyone?

College admissions is a crapshoot, so sometimes there is no understandable reason why you are rejected/waitlisted/accepted. You do not mention your major?? Many are very competitive and looking at your stats I would say your SAT score could be higher. Just remember, you are 1 of many students with similar stats. Where else did you apply?? I agree with your GC that UCLA is at least a low reach. Good luck

I can think of several reasons
-Impacted Major
-Too many good students in your high school (where do you approx rank?)
-UC’s only consider sophomore and junior…3 APs in those 2 years isn’t a lot if your school offers 20+ AP
-Lack of EC’s in impacted major

They say for letters and science, they don’t consider major but I think if you put down those 2 major and there is a significant large number of folks who want that and have more APs, more focussed ECs …that may tilt it in their favor. Again all this is speculation on my part but how and where you stand within your own high school is significant.

I go to a super competitive high school too - there’s just too many qualified applicants. UCLA has to limit the number they accept from one school.

The most likely reason is simply, there’s not enough space and they have to decline people. UCLA receives the MOST applications of any school in the US, and this year was a record. If you were waitlisted, you were a competitive applicant for UCLA.

@Godiva123 @fall2016parent @Gumbymom Thanks for the replies. My standing gpa-wise is actually quite high, since our school offers only honors courses in sophomore year. My UC gpa is higher than my friend’s who got into Harvard SCEA. Our school doesn’t rank each student, but UC gave me the ELC status. I had already been accepted to UCSD for physio and neuroscience when I saw my UCLA decision. My school doesn’t offer 20+ APs, only about 12, with most of them having prerequisites that will force you to take it in senior year. When I look at my school’s naviance, I am surrounded by a bunch of green dots, meaning that all the people who have applied before me with similar stats have gotten in. Anyways, I am not too worried, since my ultimate goal is medical school. Thanks a lot for all the replies. Btw, do you guys have any tips for me to get off the wait list? If I do get admitted, am I admitted to my first or second major, or just L&S? Thank you for reading this post and helping me understand my case.

L&s is all undeclared for admission

@5oviet So there is absolutely no difference between applying for Iranian studies (lols) and the major that I applied for? I find that hard to believe

Yes there is no difference. Only engineers are considered for majors. Scroll down to the bottom http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_fr/frsel.htm

I am sorry but I think that’s for show.

What do you mean? Aha I remember this applies for Berkeley as well. You can search it for yourself but all L&S applications are equal and not considered for major. Regardless I wish you best of luck!

I’m so sorry to hear that you were waitlisted. Honestly, they may have assumed that you were planning on going to a more elite school. I’ve heard of that happening in some cases, and with your stats, it’s really odd that you didn’t get in. I’d say it might have been something in your essays normally, but what you said you wrote about sounds fantastic. I don’t really get it.

I was waitlisted as well, and I’m sort of going through the whole disappointment mixed with confusion as I’m kind of in the same boat. The entire admissions process is a little confusing at times, to say the least.

Best of luck to you if you choose to remain on the waitlist, despite the small percentage of students that are admitted off the waitlist, I think you have a great chance!

@sillymichelleeee Yes it’s very confusing. Maybe it’s for the best  My parents keep telling me that I should just stop worrying, and I will eventually. I wish you the very best of luck as well. Hopefully we end up somewhere where we can be both happy

I got into Pomona college with a nice scholarship, so bye-bye UCLA  I will take off my name from the wait list as soon as my enrollment for Pomona is final. Best of luck to all future Bruins, as well as those who are in the wait list. Don’t lose hope!

I got in off waitlist for biochem yesterday
