I'm wondering if i can find a sheet of classes recommended for Freshman or at least a catalog of the classes to pick from. I'm really dead in the water as to what classes i want/should take and my Orientation date is coming up.

Choose one from each category:

English
Psychology, Sociology, Macro/Micro Economics, Geography or any other social science
intro Chem, intro Bio, intro Physics, or any other natural science
intro French, intro Spanish, intro German, or any other foreign language
Precalculus, Calculus, or Statistics

thanks a lot for dumbing it down. That helped a lot. Do you know where I can find a catalog for the classes covering each section?

you can look up course offerings for the fall here – https://buonline.binghamton.edu/banner/bwckschd.p_disp_dyn_sched – select fall 2009, you then get to a page where you can tell it what courses you are looking for – by department, by gen ed requirment, by class time, etc.

there is also an unofficial site that was created by a student – bingbuilder.com
bingbuilder can make it easier to search quickly and see what various possible schedules will look like – but ALWAYS check the official listing for a course as well since it may include some info not readily apparent on bingbuilder (such as enrollment being limited to certain students – for example, some sections of calculus are only for engineering students). also always check enrollment figures – but remember, spots in some classes (often ones that freshmen are likely to be interested in) are opened for each orientation – so even if a class you want looks full, check again when you go to orientation. but be prepared with various alternatives since you may not get your first choices.

also remember – registering for classes is the last thing you do at orientation – you will have time prior to that to get input and help in planning your schedule.

to supplement the advise you’ve already gotten – consider trying to fulfill some gen eds to get them out of the way and also consider taking course in departments you are considering majoring in to help you decide if you are in fact interested (those may also satisfy gen eds).

delete…

I think it really depends on the type of track you’re thinking about going into. Science or Non-Science makes a big difference. But it’ll make a LOT more sense once you go to orientation.

Generally, I’d suggest an english class, possibly a history/social science type class (N, P or G gen ed), a science class or two if you’re a science major, and if not maybe something that just looks like it’d be fun. Or maybe you’re into choir/band/orchestra and that could get you another credit or two.

Some courses, when you are looking through the course catalog (the link is provided above), will say something like “appropriate for first year students,” especially if they are intro courses. Just keep your eye out for this.

thanks a lot everybody this really helped.
