Recent Fordham Alum willing to take any Questions

Hi guys,

I graduated in 2008 from Fordham's College of Business Administration with a degree in accounting and am now working for a top 5 accounting firm. If you have any questions about the business school, job prospects, or Fordham in general (admissions questions, questions about dorms/cafeteria/etc), please feel free to ask me. I'm going to be taking questions all week and will be answering immediately, as I know it is a very stressful time of the year for many of you. Good luck to all!

I am considering transferring to Fordham and was just wondering what scholarship options are available for continuing students?

i applied to cba for fordham, and realistically, it’s very much my first choice. i was wondering if you knew anything about the rigor and rewards of the bs/mba dual degree program. should i just go for an accounting degree or should i look seriously into doing the dual degree program? thanks!

Hi kex971, I am not too sure but I would assume it would be limited in comparison to the ones that apply straight from high school. If you commute, Fordham gives you a commuter scholarship of $6,000, which is pretty cool.

hi jsan92 sorry for the late reply. Going for the accounting degree and dual degree program aren’t mutually exclusive, you can do both. In other words, you can get a BS in Accounting and an MS/MBA in Finance, Marketing, Management, etc or a BS in any of the concentrations and then an MS/MBA in accounting. If you go into accounting, I think you would have to do the dual program anyways under the new CPA requirements, which requires you to have a minimum of 150 credits before you can sit for the exam. So I do not think it’s a matter of rigors/rewards as it is necessity.

As for picking a major, take some courses freshman and sophomore year before deciding. You will have taken your required intro Finance and Accounting classes by then. Get a feel for what you like. Accounting is the most stable of all majors in the CBA in terms of getting you the job. But what it comes down to at the end of the day is really your preference and field of interest.

Good luck!

I would love to hear more about the Fordham business program! I feel like I want to head in the direction of front office management for a professional baseball team. How do you see me going about doing this at Fordham? Also, how feasible would it be for me to minor in a language such as, Japanese, in the business program?

And I heard something about a cafeteria…?

I would major in management and take some sports management classes at Fordham. We have a very relationship and footing in the sports world and being in NY will be very conducive to getting internships.

I may be wrong but I do not think they offer a minor in Japanese, although they offer advanced courses in Japanese. You would have to check with the language department (just google Language Department Fordham and find a contact).

The dining hall/cafeteria of Fordham isn’t all that good. The food wasn’t that great when I was there unless they have improved it. However, they are building a new dining hall and I think it will be completed during your time at Fordham.

Are there any other popular business fields out there majored in Fordham besides Accounting and Finance?

Marketing is quite popular.
Management and Business Economics are also top choices.

Wow, that’s it? That’s little to choose from for business majors.

Dude there are a lot of majors. I was answering your question about which ones are the most popular. Read more carefully.
Go to the website - there are about 10 fields to choose from.

^ Keep that linked.

I heard from someone that Fordham’s student organization clubs are pretty inactive except about 3-4 vice versa. Is this true?

Starbury- any idea how last year’s business management majors did in the job market? It seems accountants will always find work, not so sure about managers.

I’m not too sure Merrecho. I know for a fact that accounting and to some extent finance students do very well in the job market as is true with most business schools. Right now, accounting is very “hot,” and if you’re going to a school like NYU or Fordham, you’re very likely to land a job with the Big 4. Either ways, what I can tell you is that Fordham’s career services is one of the best and if you do well in your classes and are active in internships/clubs/EC’s, there is no reason why you should not have a full-time job before or upon graduation. Go on businessweek’s website - it’ll give you a better insight (I think about 80% of the students end up with a job offer upon graduation).

It depends upon your involvement with the club. Some are active and some aren’t as much. And if some clubs aren’t as active as you want them to be, it opens up an opportunity for you to take on a leadership position in that particular club and revamp it, which a lot of students do and is very impressive when it comes to interviews. I do think Fordham’s CBA suffers from lack of funding (no business building, small offices for faculty, etc), which has being addressed recently. In spite of that, Fordham is considered to be one of top business schools in the country education wise and recruiting wise.

Which one is more difficult? Accounting or Finance?

Hi,

I’m visiting Fordham soon and will be taking the train. (I live in NJ.) How far is the Fordham Road station from the actual college? I’m nervous about walking alone in the Bronx.

Thanks

This too – Fordham University’s college of business administration seems to have an average undergraduate GPA of a 3.15. May you tell me whether the online statistics is accurate? How many college kids graduate with a GPA of a 3.75 as business majors?

Would you describe attending Fordham as a fun college experience?

“Which one is more difficult? Accounting or Finance?”

That’s a tough and a very general question to answer. It really depends on your interest. Many students find accounting to be very dry and boring but then there are others who actually do very well in it.

“I’m visiting Fordham soon and will be taking the train. (I live in NJ.) How far is the Fordham Road station from the actual college? I’m nervous about walking alone in the Bronx.”

It’s about 7-8 minute walk. If you walk during the day (like afternoon), the streets are really busy with vendors and all, so you have absolutely nothing to be afraid of. Just make sure you come during the day (on a weekday).

“This too – Fordham University’s college of business administration seems to have an average undergraduate GPA of a 3.15. May you tell me whether the online statistics is accurate? How many college kids graduate with a GPA of a 3.75 as business majors?”

It was about a 3.0 when I graduated so the numbers seem correct. I would say not too many graduate with a 3.75+, the grades are somewhat deflated and you need to work relatively hard to get those kind of grades. I graduated with a 3.25 and I had a 1350 on the SAT/~3.5 GPA in HS. But I should have worked a little harder in college. You just need to work really hard for a 3.5+

"Would you describe attending Fordham as a fun college experience? "

Depends what your definition of fun is but yes. Fordham is a robust intellectual community and there are many facilities there for students. The campus is beautiful and well integrated, the people there are nice and friendly, the city is 25 minutes away, and it’s great having D1 Athletics.
