So while filling out the CSS profile and what not I was wondering whether it would be a financial advantage for them to be separated or divorced. Does anyone know anything about this?

Many schools that use the CSS Profile require information from BOTH parents regardless of marital status. If your parents are separated or divorced, your custodial parent (the one you live with) would fill out the Profile, and your non-custodial parent (the one you don’t live with) would fill out the non-custodial parent Profile form.

Some schools don’t require non-custodial parent Profiles. You need to contact the schools YOU are applying to and ask.

If the schools require the non-custodial parent Profile, then NO there is no “advantage” to having your parents divorced or separated.

P.S. If either of your parents is remarried…the financial info (income and assets) from their spouses would also be reported on the correct Profile form.

thanks i guess i was just wondering if there was a difference between “separated” and “divorced” financially

If you indicate “separated”, just be prepared to provide documentation if asked that can prove that your parents ARE really separated.

okay thanks
