Hi,

The two professors I've known the longest and think the most highly of me are both philosophy profs. I intend to major in philosophy. My question is, will it hurt my application if both of my letters of recommendation come from philosophy professors? Should I get another prof who doesn't know me as well to write one from another dept?

I think it would help you to get both letters from within the major your applying for. I guess it depends on your grades a little bit too though. If you have only high marks in your philosophy classes (and lower marks elsewhere) and on top of it you only get the philosophy department to send both of your LORs, it might not look as strong as having someone from a department you’ve struggled with a bit send an LOR, especially if they’re willing to talk you up despite not being a high flying A+ student.

Hope that helps.

Yes, that definitely helps. I’ve gone ahead and gotten them from my philo profs - I’ve got a 3.79 gpa, with some fairly good grades from other depts. Thanks for the quick reply!
