Recommendation Letters (How many do we need?)

My two choices for recommendation letters are my AP art history teacher (I did extremely well in the class) and my future AP english teacher (I'll also have her for Journalism) who has known me since I was a freshman. She oversees the school paper and I am Editor-in-Chief. Basically we have a very good relationship.

But how many TEACHER RECOMMENDATION letters do I need? I always thought it was one teacher rec and one guidance rec, but the common app. has two teacher evaluation sheets. Does NYU want those both filled out by different teachers?

Also: I know AP Art History is not an academic subject like math or science but the class really meant a lot to me and I got to know this teacher outside of class as well by assisting her in some design projects. I'm going to apply to CAS for Journalism, hopefully with a double major in Art History (because I think if you're a Journalism major you have to double major?) Is this a good idea to use her as a recommendation if NYU requires two?

First of all, do provide two teacher recommendations. Many colleges want that and NYU certainly does (go by the Common App forms). You are advised to ask two teachers in academic subjects to write the recommendations for you (aside from the guidance counselor). If you feel the third rec from the AP Art Hx teacher will add substantially to the admissions people’s understanding of you and your strengths, then it will not hurt to add more recs. I do not think the schools penalize you.

My son had 5 longer recs (2 teachers, the asst principal - who taught him AP world hx, the principal and the guidance counselor). He also had a brief recommendation from an assemblyperson he interned with. NYU gave him a scholarship, so obviously the extra recs did not hurt. Though you should make sure to include recs that add dimension to you as an applicant to NYU.
