Recommendations on dorms at UF

Jennings and Broward are the traditional Freshman Dorms. Both dorms are very social. Living in Broward and Jennings is great experience for the Freshman who is looking to meet new people and get acclimated to the University of Florida. Unfortunately, two negatives to Broward and Jennings:

1) Location: Though close to Sorority Row, Jennings and Broward are not the best located dorms on campus. The majority of important facilities on campus (Library West, Tourlington, Gator Dinning, Rec Center, Hub, Reitz, majority of classes, Florida Gym, the Stadium, etc) are located either on the west or east side of campus. With that said, both dorms are not that bad location wise as long as you don't mind a 7-10 minute walk to class, etc.
2) Not the nicest dorms on campus...small rooms, share bathrooms with 40-50 people, etc.

***Both dorms are soon to be renovated so subject to change

All in all, I was a Freshman this past year and really enjoyed my time in Jennings. Jennings and Broward are the most social of all freshman dorms and you meet a bunch of people. The question you have to ask yourself though is "Can I live in a small room and share a bathroom with 40+ people?" If can stand the living conditions these dorms are VERY GOOD FOR FRESHMAN.

Beaty:

MUCH NICER ROOMS than Broward and Jennings but no where as Social.

Positives:

Beaty Market downstairs (Even though it is VERY expensive)

Nice rooms (newer looking than Broward and Jennings)

Bathroom with shower, etc. Only share with 4 people

Your own Kitchen (Fridge, stove, etc) unlike Broward and Jennings where you have a Kitchen in the commom room

Negatives:

Not as social as Broward and Jennings

Same location as Jennings

mildly pricier

Yulee: Located near Broward. Not as social or well known as Beaty, Jennings, and Broward. Have not met many people from Yulee but have heard good things about the dorm. It was recently renovated and supposedly has much nicer rooms than in Broward and Jennings.

Dorms on the west and east side...Tolbert Area, Fletcher, Sledd, Graham, Fletcher, Thomas and Buckman (No AC)

GREAT LOCATION
RIGHT NEAR EVERYTHING ON CAMPUS
STEP OUT OF YOUR DORM AND RIGHT NEAR CLASS
MUCH NICER than Broward, Jennings, and Beaty but not typically Freshman dorms
These dorms are more for sophm. and up

If you have a core group of friends coming up from HS and want to live in a nicer dorms I would def. consider these.

Rawlings: Very similar to Broward and Jennings...

Murphree: Recently renovated. Amazing location. Very high returners rate. Virtually impossible to get as a Freshman.

Keys:Freshman have no chance! Must have atleast 30 + credits to apply for Keys. One of the Nicest dorms at UF.

Springs: Heard Great things! One of the newest dorms on campus. Solid location but still a good walk to class (5-10 min). VERY hard to get in as Freshman.

Lakeside: Great Dorm! Very nice apartment style rooms, kitchen, nice bathroom, etc. One of the nicest dorms at UF. But EXPENSIVE and VERY far from campus.

Graham, Simpson: Great Location. Rooms similar to Broward, Rawlings, Jennings but the dorms are much nicer. Some freshman live there but majority would be sophomore on up.

Don't worry to much about not being in a dorm with freshman. It might be an advantage living in Jennings, Broward, and Rawlings with the high number of Freshman but I know a BUNCH of freshman living in Graham, Simpson, Fletcher, Murphree, etc. who LOVE IT. As long as you're able to meet people through school, fraternity, or organizations you'll be fine.

I know picking a dorm can be stressful but don't worry it will all work out! Congrads on becoming a Gator!!! Go Gators!!!

Which dorms are available for Summer B? Thanks

See the rates page. At the very bottom it shows the Summer B dorms.

what is the best dorm to get for summer b?

I'm going to be starting in the Fall, and I know that Jennings and Broward are very similar, but what ARE the differences between the two? I know that I want to be in a very social dorm, I might go sorority, but I'm not a partier 100% of the time. I like a balance. I heard that Broward is chaos always, whereas Jennings is a bit more calm. Is this true?

Thanks :)

Jennings has more girls. There are are 6.5 female floors and 2.5 male floors. Broward is pretty equal between guys and girls. Both have good amount of girls joining sororities.

You can try the Reid/Mallory/Yulee area around Broward, but its hard to pre-determine the personality of the floor since the residents make it what it is. I know floors in Broward, Jennings, and Mallory who have been really close and did everything together but I have also seen the opposite where the floor was noisy or too wild, etc.

There are useful resources and links at [UF Dorms - University of Florida Dorms](http://www.ufdorms.com)

Hey all, in addition to UF’s housing site and the links posted above, I found a blog that has a ton of helpful information: [UF Dorms Advice](http://uf-dorms.com)

Hope this helps!

WOW, you found that blog pretty quick. It started on the May 15th, 3 day ahead. The site was registered May 11th. There only info is about Ivy House and Windsor House. Oh, and a whois search says the site is registered to: TriMark Properties LLC . And who owns Ivy House and Windsor House??? Trimark!!! Great blog, I’m sure.

im looking into some good dorms for freshmen.
i was looking at broward and jennings…

the set up of the rooms arent too different, but i was wondering if broward had carpet?
in the virtual tour it almost looks like carpet… while jennings looks like it has tile. is that right?

and if you had to chose from these two, which would you pick and why?

thanks

they both have tile.

and, Jennings. It’s nicer…like, the majority of it has been renovated.

(I’m moving there in 2 days!)

Even though this is old, I’d like to offer input for any baby Gators looking for it (as this question comes up time and again):
I lived in Jennings initially. I found out I couldn’t deal with dorm life (you don’t get your own kitchen and have to share a bathroom with 40 other people??). Additionally, my roommate was uncooperative and we didn’t get along too well on some basics (e.g. when to go to sleep, when to not turn the television on).
Furthermore, when it came to the “social” aspect of the dorms…it drove me nuts and I was overstimulated. After rushing, and joining a panhel sorority I had more than enough chatting to last me a lifetime in the day. I want to do my laundry, why are you talking to me? I’m trying to study…why…are you trying to talk to me? There were literally people everywhere and everybody was trying to meet everyone. I’m one of those people that comes home from a day of work/school and just wants to unwind in a relaxed environment. Jennings definitely didn’t provide that for me.
I moved to Lakeside after Fall semester of my first year. At first it was great because I got my own room and only had to share a kitchen with three other people. However, I started to note some issues.
I had a 7:30 class and getting to it was a testament to my dedication…January on my scooter at 6:50-7:00 in the morning for about a mile was rough for me. I got through it, though.
The rooms are abnormally small. I now live in an apartment and the space is amazing to me…I feel as though I can breathe. Not to mention the beds are mostly set up higher so it’s kind of precarious to get into/onto them at night…and then off of them again.
The doors slam like NO OTHER. My roommate…well, one of them…was extremely inconsiderate and careless and just let her door slam shut…every…single…time. Ack. I did get ear plugs, but the doors are very heavy and make a huge noise when they shut.
POINT BEING:
If you can handle dorm life, sure, go for it. One of my sisters lived in Broward and love love LOVED it. She knew all of the people, loved her roommate, and now they’re living together in an off-campus apartment.
If you’re worried about the “social” aspect of dorm life, however, I assure you that there is no better way to jump start your social life than to Rush (for a fraternity or sorority). It was honestly EFFORTLESS for me to meet people and it made the campus a lot smaller. Between philanthropies, socials, parties (there is ALWAYS somebody to go out with), hanging out at the house, or just chatting with some of the girls I’m closer to (those which I do consider my actual sisters) I actually had more to do than I possibly could. 175 people were there for me to wave to whilst walking down the road or stop and ask for little things (like directions - yeah, I got lost a lot…) whenever I needed them. Don’t go into a dorm arrangement for the social aspect…go into it because it’s the right living arrangement for you and your personality. :)

Right now I can choose between a two room double in Sledd or a regular double in Yulee. What should I do???

I want to bump up this spread because I feel like it has a lot of useful information and I hope current students can add their two cents to it! :D

Best dorm for UF?

Murphree Area! Particularly, Sledd Hall I would say since it is so central to everything. Great atmosphere, beautiful area, social traditional floors. Perfect place to be

1.) Murphee: oldest dorms on campus yet still beautiful and right by midtown
2.) Beaty: a bathroom that’s not shared with a floor, kitchen, nice rooms. Keys and lakeside are nicer than Beaty but they are also like, non social at all and are away from all the main stuff of campus
3.) Rawlings: SUPER social…could be too social but it’s nice

Beaty is the best with social and convenience both balanced BUT I put Murphee at top because you’re right next to the stadium, classes, MIDTOWN and the floors are nice with an amazing outdoor courtyard

Truth! As someone who has lived in Beaty and Murphree, I would def say Murph. Even though I miss some things in Beaty, there are more Pros to Murph than Cons in my book

Which do you recommend to a freshmen? I’m looking for something social but not too chaotic and that’s close to the classes/amenities.
