My son just did the first practice exam in the Red book and somehow he felt like the English section was a bit strange, different from Principle Review 1296 and Kaplan. I have heard that 3 of the 5 exams in the Red book are real old version of ACT. is it true? If so, which ones are more recent version?

The tests are real. The PR and Kaplan tests are the ones that should feel strange.

I did practice from the red book and the tests are exactly like the real thing (since they ARE the real thing, technically). My practice tests and real tests were all within a point of each other.

3rd party test prep books are great for studying and extra practice, but your son should definitely make sure he’s done tests from the red book as they will give him experience with what the real test is like.
