Reed Waitlist 2021

Anybody call yet?

I sent an email and they said they’ve not accepted anybody off the wait list because their class is full…this was my reply

Thank you for reaching out and for your continued interest in Reed College. We have not officially visited our wait list this year, and our class is currently full. We will know more about the status of our waitlist in the coming weeks and will inform you as soon as we can.

To best prepare for the fall, it would be a good idea to apply to other schools to ensure that you have an educational route in place if we are unable to open space in the class.

Looks like we’re getting another year with 3 people. Maybe even less. I’m done thinking about the waitlist (or at least actively thinking about it - it’s hard to give up hope). Good luck, I guess.

This year was quite a crappy year for waitlisted and transfer students for the most part. :frowning: Sorry guys.

The thing I don’t get is why their wait-list is still open if their class is full. Most top LACs closed their waitlists by the end of June because their classes were full. Have they released some students from the wait-list yet?

@swatha , without knowing the details at Reed specifically, remember that the WL is dynamic. Right now, they are full. But IF 6 students who have deposited choose not to come – they get into a preferred school off that school’s WL, they are ill or injured, they decide to take a gap year (i.e., an athlete who qualifies for nationals and decides to train for the year) or upperclassmen decide to study abroad, there will be spaces.

Realistically, at this point in the summer, the odds are against there being much movement, but it could happen. I know a boy who got into Stanford in mid-August.

I think that a lot of people think that schools are simply going their lists until they hit capacity, but they are also losing people whom they thought they had.

On many threads, there is grumbling about the lack of closure. For those who want it, simply decide to remain committed to the school where you have deposited or take yourself off the list.

Reed will have single specific number of desired students for the fall term; it has to do with faculty advising load and dorm space. If the summer melt (incoming and returning) is more than expected, one or more spots will open up.

As @gardenstategal noted, I don’t know of a school that publishes a policy regarding the use of the waitlist and when it will be closed. I think far too many have held on to the notion that a waitlist denial will magically turn into an acceptance. Hopefully, everyone had an appropriate mix of target, reach and safety schools; based on what I see on CC, inappropriate expectations may have resulted in a pile of denials, a pile of waitlists, and a couple of safeties that weren’t ever expected to be potential matriculations - hopefully not.

Any news or updates, anyone?

Orientation starts on the 18th for international students. I’d let this one go, @swatha

Finally some much needed closure.

According to their most recent e-mail, Reed was unable to offer a place to anyone on the waitlist.

That was very interesting to me…I’m just wondering why they kept us this long

Looks like Reed has 414 entering students in the Class of 2021. They typically enroll around 350 (the Class of 2020 was 355). So it looks like they miscalculated and accepted too many students this year. It’s not surprising that no one got off the waitlist.

Something similar happened with the Class of 2019, which ended up at 426 entering students, the largest in school history. The Class of 2021 will be the second largest.

The acceptance rate went from 31% last year to 35% this year, although the size of the applicant pool didn’t change much. It seems possible that boosting the acceptance rate was not the right move.
