I talked to admissions yesterday and learned that the expected number of students pulled from the waitlist will be few to none this year. I will keep my name on the waitlist, but as chances are basically zero, I’m putting a deposit on UC Davis for fall semester. Best of luck to everyone!
Yeah I talked to my admissions officer a couple days ago, and she said they haven’t admitted anyone yet. I really hope they end up admitting some. Last year some people heard back in mid-June to early July.
Don’t worry y’all – you’re not missing out on a lot. College is mostly what you make of it. Your most memorable experiences will be the people you are around, wherever you go. I can imagine why, at this point of your lives, you’d like to go to Reed, but it’s just a school and it has its problems, and honestly we don’t do things dramatically differently or something.
One thing Reed has that few others have is the required senior thesis which shows grad schools that you know how to do original research and write about it. It gives Reed the reputation for being a grad school prep college, and the statistics to back it up. So if you don’t end up at Reed, but want some of the benefit, do that optional senior thesis. It’ll be harder when all of your classmates aren’t writing one, but it may be worth it.
Has anybody gone off the wait list yet
@manmade International waitlisted applicant here. Any news on the waitlist yet? Will any students be taken off the waitlist this year? Anyone get in from the waitlist yet?
Hi, @swatha : we have far too many international students coming to Reed this year, so it is highly unlikely that any international students, particularly those seeking aid, would be admitted from the waiting list.
Any news on the wait-list? Heard that they had begun releasing students from the wait-list.
No news here.
I just talked to them and they said they haven’t pulled students yet because they’ve had a “botched” class this year. Tell me about it Reed!
Botch as in a badly selected class or what? This is the longest I’ve been on any wait list, same applies to Hamilton College…i’ll be happy if any of them accepts me at this point though.
Two things can go wrong: Higher yield than expected, and fewer transferring out than expected.
@vonlost Their retention rate for 2016-2017 was 88%, and with 420 students being accepted year prior to that, it would follow that around 92 students transferred out of the college. The number of transfer students accepted last year was around 109(with 42 enrolling), to have an idea. It’s a relatively high retention rate I’d say.
I’m still surprised that they haven’t touched the waitlist yet (for freshmen and transfers?). It seems admissions is going by a new script this year, doing the whole second transfer admission batch (whose decisions are going to be released 07/15).
edit: random bit of info on the waitlist. From 2012-2016, the number of students accepted off the waitlist were: 56, 45, 59, 3 (???), and 136 (???).
The two last years were radically unpredictable, and this year might be no different.
I second Rhay20, what does ‘botched’ mean in this case?
@coolbeans2021 did they mention anything else about the wait-list? I had e-mailed them and they replied that they were still actively looking at students on the wait-list but haven’t offered admission to anybody yet. Does this mean that some students may still be taken off the wait-list? Or are we just waiting for the summer melt?
I have no idea what they mean by botched that’s why I put it in quotes because I had no other way to describe it cus I don’t really understand either lol but I suppose it means they’re having a difficult time figuring out admissions. They haven’t admitted transfer students yet and last year they admitted transfer students in June. My guess is that they want to cover all their bases and not admit too many students like in 2015 but they’re being a but overly cautious. Sorry if this doesn’t make any sense I’m at a concert and don’t have a lot of brain power rn
@coolbeans2021 You have a point, but the clarify… They -have- admitted some transfer students already, but not as many as usual (as of now). Then again, it’s hard to truly know that just by looking at the transfer thread (Where “only two” people got accepted, and one isn’t going.) As usual, I’m sure not everyone who was accepted is on this site, but it definitely was a smaller number than previous years.
Are they waiting to accept a bunch of them at once? Are they opting to accept just a handful?
Questions questions~
edit: I’d suggest to call them but they’re closing in a few minutes. Hopefully they release some decisions tonight, right?
“botched” seems like pretty awkward wording. I’d recommend calling them on Monday and if they use any strange wording, asking them to clarify. It’s pretty insane that they haven’t touched the waitlist yet (I mean, I have friends who leave for college in less than a month!). I can’t say I regret pulling my name off of it… Best of luck to everyone still waiting!
As an international student, I would really appreciate it if someone in the USA called and asked for more clarification on the wait-list.
Is anyone calling today? I pretty much gave up on, but I’m interested to hear why they think they have a “botched” class this year.
