How many reference letters needed typically for top schools/common app etc?

Typically, from whom should we be requesting the references and how many? Heard one of them from the guidance counsellor is mandatory - is it from guidance counsellor or from university counsellor?

How do you guys plan to do it?

I’m planning to get letters from teachers that are advisors of clubs that I’m dedicated to. Also, math and science teachers that know I’m a good student. I don’t think you need one from university counsellor but idk.

Im definitely getting one from guidance counsellor

Probably some places that I’ve volunteered at.

But I havent thoroughly thought it out.

Most colleges require, particularly with commonapp:
-Two recommendations from teachers
-One “school report” from your school guidance counselor, who will also submit a short recommendation along with the school report

Beyond those two, some colleges will allow 1-2 additional recommendations.

The two recommendations are really intended to be written by teachers of core classes (math, science, English, history). In fact, many colleges will ask specifically that they come from teachers of core classes. The only way you should ever use a recommendation from someone else is if:

-You already have 2 core teacher recommendations, or
-This person knows you very well in a rigorous academic setting

If you go to the admission forum, there’s a post stickied at the top about letters of recommendation.

usually 2 are needed

is language considered a core language?

A reference letter from Spanish teacher is considered humanities? MIT suggests one from humanities teacher and one from sciences?

So, for example - Math and Spanish would be fine? or should it be like Math and English or USH ? Humanities is not clear to me with regards to foreign language … Also if the intended major is chemistry for example, is it more logical to get a letter from the chem teacher or it does not matter as such? its all not so very clear after all :-)

typically do you ask for reference letters from those subjects wherein you scored a 5 or from those teachers whom you know you the best… For example - if a teacher knows you very well and unfortunately the score in that particular AP is not the predicted 5, is it a good idea to go for that reference letter?

^Yes, Spanish is a foreign language, which is a humanity.

@pi - thanks. can you please answer to the second part of my post also?

thanks

Come to think about it, I think I’ve offended each and every one of my teachers that I’ve had so far.

Oh wait, there’s one I haven’t. Just one.

Am I screwed?

Would there be space in a common app to include a reference letter from an MP
(Member of Parliament) who graduated from Harvard Law? <– so jealous

What does this have to do with the CollegeBoard’s Advanced Placement Examinations?
