@Lilliana330: Yeah, Berkeley doesn’t consider you for another major if you aren’t accepted into the one you apply for. And, sorry, but it’s too late to change your major or change colleges. L&S is generally considered to be easier to get into than COE, but your reasoning for applying there makes sense (that it’s easier to switch out of ChemE than into it). I understand that you’re nervous because you didn’t get selected for Regents’, but that just means you weren’t in the top 5%. There’s still another ~15% left that gets admitted (assuming the admit rate is about 20%). Berkeley is very holistic which is generally a plus, so there isn’t much you can do but wait it out. Good luck!

@soaringcicada Thanks! I’m guessing for Berkeley it probably would’ve been the same since it’s College of Chemistry for both, but L&S would’ve been nice for the other UCs -which apparently don’t care for my second major either, despite still giving the option in the app. ): Oh well, I can only hope for the best now!

@roxy481 My advice for the interview is to relax and be yourself. My son is politically conservative and I thought that might work against him in the interview so I told him to avoid all those subjects. He didn’t listen to me and talked about what he was passionate about, and ended up receiving the scholarship.

@lilliana330 I’m pretty sure most other UCs do consider you for your alternate major (I think all others do, but don’t quote me on that!). UCLA and UCSD say that they consider students for their alternate majors, but I don’t know what kids applied to and what they were accepted to. Maybe that should be added to the templates. Berkeley doesn’t even let you list an alternate and is very clear that you only get that one chance to get in.

@soaringcicada UCLA’s website says they don’t care for your major if you applied L&S, but if you applied Eng/Arts/etc. they won’t even look at the 2nd one. https://www.admissions.ucla.edu/FAQ/FR_During.htm Hopefully getting the email from UCSD about being a top applicant means something…?

In case anyone is following this, @Lilliana330 taught me something new … UCLA will not consider you for an alternate major if you apply to any college other than Letters and Science. Good to know.

We just took our convo offline since it was no longer relevant to Berkeley Regents’. I figured I’d publicly give her kudos for pointing that out, though.

This is an old post, but in case any parents or high school seniors are searching for any info on Cal Regents and Chancellor Scholarship. My son received an email on Feb 11, 2014. It said he was invited to interview for the scholarship and that he was assured a spot in the Fall 2014. He went on to interview in Los Angeles in mid March. He found out he received the scholarship at the end of March when Cal sends out their official acceptances. He is currently at Cal and is very happy with his choice! Lots of perks for the Regent students!!!

haha, you didn’t give any information except to say your son got it… lol

What information would you like to know. The point of my post was to tell the date my son was notified of the Regents and Chancellor Scholarship interview.
