Regents?

How hard is it to get the Regents Scholarship? I have a 4.2 UC GPA and a 34 ACT. Would I be considered for this or the Alumni scholarship?

Yeah I think with those stats you’d be under consideration.

What’s the difference between the two scholarships? I’d also be interested in knowing the percentage/stats behind how many actually get the Regents one. I hope you’re talking about the Regents and Chancellors scholarship? Haha, I’m always out of loop with all the Berkeley stuff xD

Alumni Scholarship is a separate scholarship given by the alumni association.

You may get either one, both, or neither.

@Recoveringhobo (love that nick, btw): Are you looking for people’s stats on here? Cuz if you’re talking about the Regents and Chancellors Scholarship, I could give you mine

Yes, I have no clue what it takes to receive either of the scholarships. Stats of people who received them at Berkeley (or any UC for that matter) would be appreciated!

Ok, soooo…
-Incoming freshman (Class of '15), female, out of state from the Midwest
-32 ACT, 2020 SAT, 800 SAT II Spanish, 750 SAT II US History, 700 SAT II Literature
-3.92 unweighted GPA (stupid B in AP Physics…), 5.00 weighted GPA, salutatorian
-I took 8 AP classes in all (two 5’s, one 3, and the rest were 4)

There you go  Anything else, just ask!

11 people in my high school graduating class received the Regents Scholarship at Berkeley. All of them had at least 2250 SAT and 3.9 UW GPA. Most of them didn’t come to Cal, haha.

Singh, out of curiosity, of those 11 exactly how many picked Berkeley and where did each of ther rest end up?

I believe 4 of them went to Stanford, one to Harvard, two to Princeton, and one to Yale. The remaining 3 who did not get into HYPSM came to Berkeley (a chemical engineer, a chemical biologist, and an economist).

At my high school, there is a belief that only HYPSM is worth it over in-state tuition at Berkeley.

Thanks for sharing, seems reasonable to me. Seems like a bad move to attend a Cornell or Penn or Brown over Berkeley in state.

I would add that Berkeley can be the better option over HYPSM too if financial aid packages from the privates are lame.

Out of curiosity, may I ask what is the name of your high school that have 11 Regents?

Some of them are also less expensive for many income ranges (including the lower and middle income ranges, and some higher income ranges) after financial aid, compared to UCs (even in-state).

HSM (not sure about YP) have very generous need-based financial aid for the few students whom they do admit. E.g. HS = full ride for family income under $60,000; H = $18,000 per year for family income of $180,000; M = grants for all need except $4,500.

@kidstubborn, Davis Senior High. This was a couple years ago. I believe the current graduating class had around 6-7 (might be wrong). The year we had 11 was insane; I think we had 10 Stanford admits and something like 80 Berkeley admits (40 attending Cal) that year. I rarely meet anyone here that doesn’t know at least one Davis kid.
