My son isn't 18 yet but will turn 18 this spring before going off to college next fall. Should he go ahead and register right now or does he need to wait until he's 18? There's a question on the fafsa that says he can't get aid without being registered.

He’s older than that. So does he need to register before I can complete the fafsa? I clicked on the button to register him and it seemed to let me move along in the application, so maybe he can just register later this week.

I haven’t filled out the FAFSA form yet. My son has registed with selective service though and that was easy to do online. Technically, your son isn’t 18 yet. He can register early and they will just hold his application until his birthday.

If you checked the box to ‘register’, that is enough. They will register him and send the information by mail. My son did it this way last year.

I seem to have the same problem as sjbdorlo’s son. So if I check the box “to register” on the FAFSA form, do I still need to go to the SS website and register? Or is just checking the box sufficient?

It worked for my son. He checked “register me” on FAFSA & he was all set. You can check it, then if you don’t get a notice that he is registered once he turns 18 … go to [Selective Service System: Welcome](http://www.sss.gov) and check to see if they have him registered. If not, he can do it then.

You have to say yes to “register me” or you can’t submit it. My son was 17 when we filled out the FAFSA and when he started school. We clicked “yes” there and it did sign him up at the appropriate time, close to his 18th birthday.

When one of my sons was 17 and I was doing the FAFSA, we got a postcard in the mail saying “you are not ready to register just yet” – and I think he got another postcard in the mail around his birthday.

As has been pointed out, just check the box “Register”. They will either register you or send you a card stating that you are not yet eligible to register. Gets you through FAFSA and possibly gets you automatically registered.
