In FAFSA, do I need to register my son with the Selective service?
Is this mandatory to receive aid?

Yes.

It is over age 18, but many students will soon turn 18.

The fafsa form allows you to quickly check off a box to become registered. I’m pretty sure my son was already registered, but I checked it off just to be sure.

You cannot register your son for SS. He will have to do it himself. He can also do it online.

My son was 17 when we filled out fafsa so he was not registered when we submitted it, but he registered the same week he turned 18 and he did’nt have any problems getting his aid.

My son also had checked the FAFSA box asking to be registered, since he was still 17 when we completed the FAFSA. It worked great. He did “sign” the FAFSA with his PIN, so it was a binding signature.

Which reminds me: The FAFSA is the STUDENT’S form. Parents need to include their children in the process. If the student does not sign a formal authorization & file it with the school, no one is allowed to discuss the student’s FAFSA or anything about his/her financial aid with the parent (even if the kid is under 18). This is federal law.
