Do I have to register my son for Selective Service? he is 17.

I'm filling FSFSA, Do I have to register my son for Selective Service? he is 17.
Thanks.

I had the same question. If you do a search on Selective Service on this site you will see others with the same question. General answer seems to be just check the Register Me box, and he will be registered when he turns 18.

I seem to remember with my first son, that you can actually register for the selective service a few months before you turn 18. And you do need to do it to apply for financial aid.

We just had this discussion this morning as I was filling out my estimated FAFSA for my son. Looking on the Selective Service site, they will now register them at age 17 years 3 months or something. My son turned 18 today and we just checked the box “no” and then “register me”. He did NOT want to register for this, but I told him he would get no aid and not be able to go to college!

He can do it either way. Either check the box on FAFSA and they will register him or he can go to the site and register himself, but he will not receive any aid until he is registered.

Do you mean for those people who don’t apply FAFSA (no FA needed), they don’t need to register for Selective Service at all?

It’s federal law that all 18 year old males need to register with selective service. The government has made finaid dependent on registering as one way to increase compliance with the law.

Any law to punish the people who didn’t registered?
Will all 18 year old males receive a notice from government said they must register?

[Register for the Draft: It’s Still the Law](Do You Still Have to Register for the Draft?)

I don’t recall if my son received any notice from the government, I don’t believe he did. Our high school did include it in some of the newletters they send out and I believe it was included in some of the daily announcements. I think generally, it’s supposed to be common knowledge.

If you don’t register, for one, you become permanently ineligible for any federal government job. They cross-check you with Selective Service upon application and if you’re not registered, you’re barred from entry.

Make sure they are registered. When DS got a govt. internship, they asked if he was registered and checked to see if he was. I assume the same question will be asked for any federal/govt. job.
