Registering for De Anza classes (Urgent)

I know, i know... I'm so on time. Anyway, when you register for classes online, and if you are wait listed, what does "open" and "closed" mean? Can I still stay on the wait-list? Can I stil go to class? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Example: Close-1 Waitlisted

Thanks y'all.

Open means you are still able to register/waitlist a class. Closed means you need instructor permission to apply, or registration for that class is over because the semester has already started.

Could i still go to class if I’m “Closed- 1 waitlisted”? And if I were to contact the instructor, what would I say? I’m very interested in your class, please let me in? Sorry, I’m new at this…

And also, I’m was still able to be waitlisted even though it said “closed”

Is it your first semester?

If you’re on the waitlist, you’re not enrolled in the class yet. Exactly that, come to class the first day and ask the instructor if you can add. #1 is a very good position to be on the waitlist because generally if someone doesn’t show up who is enrolled, the instructor will give the spot to the people on the waitlist starting from #1.

Yes, I’m a freshman. Um, ok… so I’ll show up on the first day even though it says Closed. What’s the difference between Open and Closed then? I’m also Open-14 waitlisted for another class.

Closed means no more students can register or try to get on the waitlist. Open means other students can try getting in or getting on the waitlist.

Does that make sense?

Thank you! I guess I’ll drop my closed waitlist thing then… -_-

Even though it’s closed, you CAN still get into the class because you’re already on the waitlist.

I hope I’m not confusing you.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, I just dropped them… ahh is there an undo button?

back button ftw. solved!!!

Hmm. You probably got dropped lower in the waitlist because of that. Or so I would think.

I doubt the “back button” solved the problem – be sure that you just didn’t see an old cached webpage. If the instructions went through to the college website, then you got dropped off of the waitlist.

There should be a place to see what classes you have signed up for and are waitlisted for – check that current status instead.

So to reclarify:

1) Waitlists can be opened or closed. It just means whether or not students are allowed to actively add themselves to the waitlist.

2) Even if a waitlist is closed - a student can show up to class the first day and hope that the professor feels there is still room in the class to add students that first day (regardless of what the computer waitlist status says). The only way to find out is to show up in person.

3) It is better to try and get onto a waitlist because it basically assigns a student a number (first come, first serve) and either A) a spot opens up and the student gets a chance to get into the class via the computer system or B) on the first day of school if there are 10 students waiting for 5 chairs the professor deems open, the professor can use the waitlist numbering system to let in students orderly.

4) Remember, even if you can’t get onto a waitlist, sometimes there is space if the student shows up that first day.

WAIT! what class is this for? and who’s the teacher? i might be able to tell you if it’s easy to get added or not

yeah whats the class/teacher?

Okay guys, I accidentally got my self off the closed waitlist, so I clicked the back button to get the codes. I then re-added them, thank god!

I currently have seven waitlisted classes ( just be safe). To explain why I have this many is that I was in the FYE program when I attended the orientation, then I had to wait until some lady register my “guaranteed classes.” She came back on the 9th of this month, which means I’m/we’re done for. So my counselor, who is part of FYE, told us to just go ahead and register for classes. Yesterday was the 13th… =/ seven days away from school

Anyway, if anyone is reading this, I would not recommend you to join FYE.

As for my waitlisted classes, I’ll give you a full list:

GENERAL OCEONOGRAPHY- Dileonardo(#1)
ARTS & HUMAN SPIRIT -Sanders (#1)
HIST OF ART/MULTICULTRL- Cadge-Moore (#5)
PRECALC I: THEORY AND FUNCTION-Sadeghi-Hassanvand (#3)
KNOWLEDGE AND REALITY - Le (got in woot!)
CRITICAL THINKING - Vician (#1)
DEVEL READNG - Argyriou (#13)
INTERCULTURAL COMMUN - Abrica-Carrasco (#5)

I’ve only gotten into one class, and that was because I added that class on 8/18. sigh
I’m hoping to get into 3/7 waitlisted classes, so I could receive my Financial aid. At this point, I don’t care about the quality of the teacher, as I know all the good teachers have already been taken. Thank you for all the help, guys. Good luck to you too!

Also, can I take two Philosophy classes at the same time? I’m gonna take Phil 1 and Phil4. Oh yea, can I change the grading for Reading 211 to normal grade rules? It’s currently pass/no pass. I think I can change it only if I’m in the class, am I right?

Oh yea, how many students per class does De Anza have? I heard if I’m top 10%, then it would be easier to add.

reading 211? from what i can read, your writing skills are excellent, so why is that??

yes, you can take 2 phil classes at the same time. you can take 3 at the same time. you can take 4 at the same time!

no matter what grade u get for that 211 class, its not UC transferrable, so all u have to do is pass it with a C and it wont matter. i suggest keeping it p/np.

and i think science classes have like 30ish and other classes like history, english, etc can have anywhere between 50-100 ppl depending on class room size

redoplease, thank you! And I don’t mean to boast, but I’ve also heard that from others too.

The reason why I was put into reading 211 was because of the noisy people next to me while I was taking the test. You see, the De Anza staffs came to my school to monitor the tests, but they couldn’t keep the area quiet.

I guess ‘perfect practice makes perfect’ applies here. I can’t wait to see what that reading class is all about!

how are you able to sign up for so many classes! haha. when i was there, you could only sign up for 21.5 before the quarter started (then add more after the quarter started).
LiveTheLimit, I can tell you with almost 100% confidence that you will get in to all those classes, except i am not sure about devel reading. i had a friend who wasn’t even waitlisted who got in, so you still have some chance. you will definitely get in to the classes which you are #1, and almost surely the rest as well.

and yeah, i agree with redo. you are going to pass that class with flying colors! it will definitely be easy for you!

HigherHopes,
I currently have four units shown on the ‘myportal,’ so I’m able to register for unlimited classes because most of them are all waitlisted. Thanks for giving me confidence! I totally lost it when I heard FYE could not get me into my guaranteed classes.

Is there a way you can retake the reading placement test? You obviously don’t need it because you read/write well already.

READ 211: Developmental Reading

5 Units
Hours: Five hours lecture.
Materials Fee: $3.50
(Formerly Reading 100.)
General Education Status: Non-GE
Degree Status: Non-Degree Applicable
Credit Status: Credit - Not degree applicable
Grading Method: Pass/Fail

Grading is pass/fail and can’t be given a letter grade because it’s not a college GE (general education) class, nor is it transferrable to UC/CSU. It’s considered remedial or essentially pre-college.

Do you feel you need to take it? If no, don’t take it – retake the placement test. However if you feel it will be helpful for you, then by all means take it.
