Ok,

So orientation is coming up and we have looked on the Binghamton site for some guidance and I still am a bit confused.

What classes are core classes that he needs to take as a freshman? What happens if he doesnt know what his major is? How do we figure out what classes are necessary to take?

Any help would be appreciated

There is a list of gen-eds that need to be taken by the time you graduate. You don’t have to finish any of them freshman year, but it’s a good idea to get them out of the way, especially if you don’t know what your major is. Here’s a list of them: <a href=“General Education | Binghamton University”>General Education | Binghamton University;

There are many classes that will fulfill each gen ed. On the BU Brain site, you can search by gen ed to see which classes will fulfill it. Also, check the link to see if he’s already gotten credit for any of them through APs or something else.

A lot of freshman like to take WRIT111 because it fulfills the J requirement and it’s a freshman-only class so it’s a good way to meet people and a relatively simple class.

thanks so much…

I have another question. There were 3 classes that were ok for freshman and fulfilled H and W requirements. But they all appear full already. is that possible? will more classes open? there has only been 1 orientation so far. my DS goes next week. Should he have registered for classes already? they said he will be doing that at orientation but there are alot of classes that are full already.

No problem! If they’re filled, then unfortunately they’re filled. You register at orientation, and for a lot of intro/freshman classes, Binghamton will hold spots. An equal number of spots are held for each orientation session, so it won’t hurt him to do a later orientation. Freshman get the short end of the stick because most of us have registered months ago, but there are many classes that have plenty of spots open. Here’s some:

HIST186C: World History to 1500 (fills G or N)
HIST202: The Greek World (N)
HIST264: Immigration and Ethnicity in the US (N or P)
ENG 283R: Calamity Jane and Cowboys (H) [[I TA’ed for this professor, she’s great]]
ANTH111: Intro Anthropology (G or N)
ANTH114: Language, Culture, and Communication in the US (N, P, or W)
ANTH221: Anthropology of Sex and Sexuality (G, N, W)
SOC100A: Intro Sociology (G or N)
ARTH102: Art History and Visual Culture (A)
ARTH252: American Art&Society 1930-1960 (A)
GEOG103: Multicultural Geographies of the US (N, P)
THEA101: Intro Musical Theater (A) [[This professor is supposed to be a “must take before you graduate” guy, I hear his classes are a ton of fun and really great]]
PSYC111: Intro Psych (L if you take the lab with it)

Also, a ton of spots are open in the Asian American, Africana, and Latin American/Caribbean Studies departments. Most classes in general will already be full because everyone other than freshman have registered so far, but intro and lower-level classes still have a lot of opportunities. Anthropology and sociology are very common for freshmen.

Also, the first two weeks of classes are the add/drop period where lots of people will be moving stuff around in their schedule. This is the ideal time to stalk classes which are filled right now, because people will drop.
