Accepted to the scholars program with the dean’s scholarship

@mia909 do you know anything about the WMP? I was accepted into the program too but I’m not sure if I want to do it because I really just want to do college now…

@PhillyStardust I’m pretty sure it’s Tufts Syndrome. My stats were really good and way above their averages and I was expecting admittance to the Honors Program as well as some merit aid, but I ended up being accepted as a spring semester student in the Washington Mentorship Program… It’s definitely an over-qualification thing, the same happened to me with BU

Absolutely shocked…
Decision: Waitlisted

President of many groups such as Honor Society, French Honor Society, Mock Trial, and many more positions in other groups. Involved a ton at school. Visited American as well. Got accepted into Georgetown and waitlisted by American…

Ok I’m gonna say it, “That’s just ridiculous!” American is missing out on a lot of potentially great students just to make their student yield look good.

@Shepherd14 Definietly an overqualified issue with you! We’re still waiting to hear. Two have been accepted from our area and one rejected. We have heard nothing and can’t create a student account, so I am expecting her to be waitlisted or possibly flat out rejected. I would go to Georgetown anyway - and you never know if American knew you were accepted to Georgetown and that’s why you were waitlisted.

After all this nonsense I think American is off her list anyway at this point!

Still have not heard anything here, either, and same expectation. This has been the worst experience thus far. My sense is that they send the acceptances out first, wait list second, and rejections last, which to me is just awful, given that the email stated that letters would go out on the 17th.

oh - and 4.2 GPA, SAT 2100 - clubs, varsity sports, work, blah blah blah …

Still nothing - and we are heading to DC tomorrow so this is our last day to check mail. Now the question is - to visit AU or not?

Weird, my daughter hasn’t heard anything either and there is nothing in her portal. Why bother mailing; so much better to notify via the portal. Daughter has very good stats and thought AU was a safety, but this makes us wonder . . .

I just called admissions and they told me that her letter was mailed out March 20, but couldn’t disclose anything else. I’m thinking lost in the mail - wouldn’t be the first time that has happened to us!

@anotherlamemom We thought American was a safety also…

@SoCold I was in the same situation a few days ago and I visited anyway. I looooved it. I think as long as you’re heading to DC you should give it a shot. Also, (not saying this is going to happen but it’s just an idea) if you end up being wait listed and they hear that you went to visit, it might benefit you. Just a thought.

Waitlisted!

Really depressing! FYI, D visited and apparently it made no difference. Was hoping for a merit scholarship and couldn’t even get admitted. Don’t understand this. What are they looking for?

FYI, D was able to make a student portal so apparently that doesn’t mean anything!

The only people that can answer the question of what American was looking for is the admissions committee. I understand the confusion and natural licking of wounds in a strong candidate pool. At the same time though, please be sensitive to the suggestion that overqualified applicants were denied because American didn’t think they would accept and were using the school as a safety. There are students with top stats who were admitted. They worked hard to distinguish themselves in the admission process (through their essays etc.) because they really wanted to go to American. Let’s not rain on the parade please.

Totally agree with @halflokum.

I agree with @halflokum too.

However, please understand our frustration when we have no idea whether she’s been accepted, rejected or waitlisted. We had expected a decision by now and had planned to check out the department to which she applied to more closely, but admissions won’t help us out in any way. So, it looks like we will have more time in the museums this week!

At this point, we are just looking for an answer so that we can move on!

I was accepted 2 days ago! American is one of my top choices, so I’m super excited to have finally gotten the big envelope!

To those waitlisted, AU really values demonstrated interest, so that could explain why you weren’t accepted. Just in case it helps, I visited the campus last spring and it happened to be an open house day, so I spoke with my regional representative then, throughout the application process I emailed him whenever I had any sort of question, and also had a conversation with him at a college fair last spring as well as when he came and visited my school. Good luck to all those stuck on the waiting list, I was deferred from my top choice in the winter, so I know how it feels.

Are you implying that students who were waitlisted did not work hard? I think this can be a very frustrating and confusing process. I agree there are some students who seem to have a sense of entitlement about where they should be admitted – shame on them. However, I am seeing a number of kids who are generally confused about why their credentials weren’t enough to get them into what was supposed to be a match school.

ok, so I just called American and they informed that they don’t have my high school transcript. This is very confusing to me as 1. Shouldn’t they have contacted me sooner? They assure you on the prospective student portal they if they are missing anything THEY WILL CONTACT YOU 2. My transcript was uploaded to the common app, all my other schools received it, so why wouldn’t American have?

Still nothing in the mail, so finally called and got nowhere. Letter was apparently mailed on the 20th, and I live 6 miles from the campus. Really?
