Actually, College of Charleston is a worthy suggestion. The city is charming but a little more buttoned-up than New Orleans (what city isn't!). The CofC is in the heart of the older, prettier section of town. I've had friends who had kids who went there--ythey liked the school, loved the city. Academically I believe it's on the rise. It is smaller than Tulane or UMiami.

CofC is a cute school, and it is on the rise, but if the OP wants a southern school with a northern feel, I am not sure it'd fit the bill. Charleston is a charming southern town. But it doesnt feel like Atlanta, Nashville or NOLA. That said, more northerners are coming down to CofC. I think thats also true for USC (U of South Carolina) which might be also worth a peek, though again not a "northern feeling "school. As an aside, if you like the beach, both CofC and UofMiami are great choices. So is Flagler college, for that matter (in St. Augustine) but their dorm policies are provincial, from what I hear, and that can be a real turn off. The campus, however, is gorgeous!

Do you happen to be female?? If so, you might consider Agnes Scott in Atlanta. That has a real metropolitan and cosmopolitan feel to it.

Actually, undergrad-wise, Charleston is about the same size as Miami. I visited the campus with my daughter and we absolutely loved it. Its a really good school to compare to Miami and Tulane.

first of all, everyone's feedback = UNBELIEVABLY helpful

fallen- you're absolutely right, northeastern is not at all what i've been scouring collegeboard.com for. Goucher: gave a quick glance months ago, definitely fitting but was a little turned off by the size. gave a second look after you pointed me in that direction and its slowly winning me over

CofC: have a friend from prep school who raves, though she is from SC...

(haha sorry i should have thought to mention this before but) something else to consider:

my main issue has been finding a balance between schools that are great "social" fits for me & ones that match my major/interests: tulane had the (how do i say this) "type of kids"/social scene i mesh well with but is also responsible, encourages idealistic do-gooders, and has killer abroad/internships/opportunities for my major.
also i'm older now and am very decided on communication/marketing (why i'm applying to emerson) but don't want to sacrifice the traditional college experience for specialization

EX: emerson is a good academic/professional match but not a good social match (am creative/love art but am NOT an "artsy" kid & it's an urban "campus")

no_moss: I am sure I speak for the others when I say we all wish you the best of luck. Post on here what you decide, if only because we are nosy.
