I got rejected from UCLA and I am super depressed. **** MY LIFE. At this point, life is not worth living.

I hear you, too… this weekend has been incredibly depressing and I haven’t managed to do a lot but sit around and cry. To console me, people keep saying to wait for Berkeley, but at this point I can’t get my hopes up for Cal or else I’ll really break down when I get rejected.

I am in a bad position because i did all the prereqs for ucla, but i am missing one for cal because i just applied “for fun,” not thinking that i would actually get in. now that ucla has rejected me, i am feeling the pressure, but still don’t think it will happen.

good luck to everyone! i hope we all get in!

@pschybruin I’m so sorry to hear but things will work out for the best! You go to LPC right? What is your major? i would guess psychology but im not totally sure haha

@Acuvue: WOW. I don’t even know where to begin. 4.0 TAP Psych? DAMN. I felt so bad when I heard what happened. It sucks to see people with 3.68//3.72//3.73//3.82//4.0 getting accepted. I am a psych major 3.73. I REALLY worked my ass off and I know you did too! Call them Monday! Good luckkk.

@ikeike: What was your major and stats? I feel like Berk is not as strict. Wish the best!

@anythinggoes1: I didn’t initially cry when I got the rejection. After 5-6 hours it finally hit me. Out of nowhere I started to cry and it was really bad. My father passed away and at his funeral I had told him that I will NOT let him down and I will do whatever it takes to be successful and go to one of the top colleges. &nd now with my mom’s cancer my life has just become super depressing. On top of that, I hear that I got rejected from my dream school. Life isn’t fair at all. How do you know I go to LPC? Psychology for UCLA. Been accepted to: Davis (Psychology), San Diego (Sociology, Science & Medicine). Waiting on Berkeley (Sociology)…non-impacted major with a 3.73 gpa///4.0 major gpa. What about you?

@acuvue & ikeike: We are all psych majors. So why did we get rejected…? Do you think that it was because we got a couple d’s and retook them and got good grades and UCLA felt like it was best if we were rejected? Any suggestions? By the way, Acuvue not sure if you ever failed a class or received a non-passing grade and retook it.

My friend last year got rejected from UCLA but got into UCB for Bio… from what I understand, UCB pays more attention to the personal statement than other UCs do, they look for character or an interesting life story and such and if you have one, you’re more likely to get in even if your GPA didn’t get you into UCLA.

@pinkpig0086: is there a particular source for this claim? I keep seeing it around cc… It’s two separate universities, and many people get into both. They evaluate people slightly differently, that’s all.

@Psychbruin: I had a horrible second quarter at CC. I was sick and I received two F’s, a C, a W, and a P. I retook the F’s (so my GPA after fall was 3.93) and I got in. I just explained it in the little box on the app. Did you bring it up in your app at all?

@Musafer: Yeah, I think Cal is a little bit more understanding. Plus, the major I choose for cal is non-impacted and the one for LA was impacted.

@newsoul: Aww man! I hope you’re okay! Congrats though! Ohh wow. I’ve gotten…4 D’s (retook them and got 3 A’s, 1 B), 4 W’s, 2 C’s (1 C is not uc transferable). I received a D in stats and retook it and received an A (major class). This is all in a 3-year span. 1 D was while I was still in HS. 4.0 Major, 3.73 Overall. I did! Let me PM you.

@psychbruin my gpa is 3.89 i had a HUGE amount of Ws (about 15, all from the years 2000-2003) and a really old F (like, from 2000… yes I am old!). I think that both of those things hurt me. But I also work full time, and managed to keep up a 4.0 at SMC while working full time and taking 18 units each semester, and volunteer… It just seems like I had all of the right things going for me. I do know that the psych major is hard to get into. Really wishing I had applied for sociology at Cal, so I would at least have a chance.

I also am still in my stats class right now (currently have an A) so that might be another cause for concern.

Maybe my essays were horrible and I am just in denial!

Either way, I have spent the past 48 hours trying to figure out what to do… at least I think I got into CSUN, if all else fails.

ikeike
from what i have been reading for the past two years. having the General Ed math or english IP when you apply (or when decisions are being made) seems to be related to students getting rejected. counselors really need to inform students that they must take those classes the first year, or at least complete them before the admissions process. some kids do get in with one IP, but that is unusual. regarding essays, i am positive that UCLA did not read mine and i was admitted. UCB reads them, at least that is what i have heard. anyway, hope we all get into UCB.

@ikeike: WOW. That’s a really good GPA. I think we got rejected because of the D’s, W’s. I only had 3-4 D’s and 3-4 W’s. &nd, I retook em. Got A’s, 1 B. I wrote in my ps why I messed up. Oh well. Life will be life. Good luckk on everything. Keep me updated!!!

&nd, try to appeal!

If you retook the classes then the old grades shouldn’t have been weighed in your application. I got accepted as a psych major and I had almost 40 units of retaken classes. So I don’t think your 3 classes are what did you in. I’m sorry to hear that though! You should call and find out why! Then appeal if you want!

I am thinking of calling in to ask why, not sure about the appeal though. I could always try again next year, but hate to waste another year.
Do we just call admissions and ask why we were rejected?! Seems too easy!

@ikeike, You can totally call and ask why you were rejected. I just got off the phone with their admissions department and they were very helpful. Of course, it helps if you’re super friendly in the first ten seconds of the conversation; that’ll make whoever answers your call more likely to take a good, in-depth look at your application! :)

@acuvue, thanks! I’m going to give them a call tomorrow and see what I can find out. Hopefully nothing too shocking :)

Same here man, 3.73 (3.8 by end of spring), working a high skill job 25 hours/week, major related volunteer service 7 hours/week (psychology), strong essay, igetc done, prereqs done by spring, 4.0gpa last two semesters… idk *** happened. UCLA over admitted last year, admitted 60% more out of state this year from what I hear, and a crazy number of applicants this year all resulted in the odds not being with us. Crazy though, I am seeing people with a lower gpa and no work experience getting accepted for the same program… probably first generations or something(still BS though) Anyways, hope UCB accepts me; if not I would be cool with UCSB. I did get into UCD also, but I think UCSB is basically the same academics with 100% better college life/location.

WOW. Thanatos, I am in the same exact situation as you…3.73 gpa. I think that it is ******** as well. I have so many extra-curricular. I’ll give you a couple of them: Intercollegiate tennis team @ my CC, student government, &nd volunteering for 2+ years at a hospital. Those are just a few.

Four other factors they see in accepting someone:
- Race
- Income
- First-generation to attend college
- Non-traditional student

I called them and said I was a strong applicant but there were so many people who applied. They never really gave me a good reason.

Hope CAL sees something more :]

@Psych - Income is not a part of their selection criteria
