Rejected from Hunter Macaulay with a 4.0 and 2010 SAT..

I'm just curious, is this normal?

I have hundreds of hours of volunteer work, my interview went greatly and I had spectacular essays.

Maybe there's a mistake and I should call them? I'm in shock right now.

Isn’t Macaulay Honors highly competitive? Don’t they get a lot more qualified applicants than there are spots?

I realize but I’m a highly competitive candidate. I was top 5% of my school, I showed interest in every way possible- attended every open house every event. I’ve gotten presidential scholarships from two other decent colleges and then I get rejected from here.
Why? Because I’m not a minority? I don’t see any other reason.

What school do you go to?
I go to Stuy. Nearly everyone gets in.

I didn’t apply because I don’t see myself at a CUNY, even if it is free.
I got into Stony Brook (safety) so it’s just a waiting game now.

I got to Wagner and I also got into Stony Brook, probably Honors.

I got in  I don’t think I’m going, now that I know Cornell is an option

Ask your guidance counselor to call about this. Your counselor needs to know what they are looking for so that they can recommend this program to the right applicants. The admissions officers are more likely to discuss this kind of thing with am adult than with a student.

Maybe it’s because of your attitude that the interviewers noticed. How do you know that your essays were “spectacular.” It seems like you feel entitled to this school

Were things really what they seemed? Was your high school competitive? Did you have AP classes? My daughter got in and had a 3.5 and a 2220 on SAT but she was ranked 24 out of almost 900 and took (with 4s and 5s) lots of AP classes and took two summer classes at the Macaulay Honors program last summer.

Lol my essays were edited by a lawyer, a professional essay writer and an admissions officer at Columbia, so I think I had good essays. I’m top 15ish out of 670 people of my school with 5 AP’s including senior year.

It’s not even that good of a school, and you graduate with Hunter College not Macaulay on your transcript. I was just really expecting to get in and to really consider it because of the price.

When and how did they find out about your decision to Macaulay Hunter? I have yet to get a mail or an email and I live in NYC.

Your SAT was probably what stopped you from being accepted. Macaulay Hunter usually accepts students with 2150+ SAT composite (or 1400+/1600).

I agree. The SAT score is probably what got this student rejected.

What was the breakdown of your SAT?

Were emails sent out? I live out of state and didn’t hear anything yet.

We got the e mail yesterday and the actual mail today.

I got into Macaulay Hunter yesterday and I applied with a 31 ACT, so it was probably more than the SAT scores. They have a really small number of seats so your application had to be appealing on the holistic viewpoint.

Sorry though :(.

My son has a 4.0 and 2200 SAT score and was waitlisted. He is a varsity captain, hospital volunteer and works for a nonprofit organization. He was offered a spot in Hunter College Arts & Sciences, which is probably regular Hunter, and given a partial scholarship. His friend had similiar stats and was accepted, as were a lot of other students in his school.

No one knows what colleges are looking for anymore. He was bummed about it, as was I, but we have since accepted it and moved on. I keep telling him he will end up exactly where he was meant to be. You will, too.

Does anyone know if they email rejections too? We’ve heard nothing…

Do you know if they email rejections too? We’ve heard nothing yet.

I got waitlisted as well. I had a 2010 SAT, great recs (one by a professor of a renowned university), A LOT of extracurriculars (clubs, community service, independent science research). Was VERY schocked. They offered me a place at regular Hunter with a scholarship, but I’m not really considering it. Don’t worry though (OP), it seems like you’ll get in other great places.

That’s insane. I know it’s been 5 years but your son definitely should’ve gotten in. My sat was 90 points less than him and I was a hospital volunteer with a 4.0 gpa but he seems to have been much more qualified than me and I got in. Weird. Same with you, OP.
