Has anyone else gotten notification of their college decisions? I just got rejected from long beach and am wondering how competitive they are? I have a 4.1 with a 2010 sat (800math) a 29 act and I got a 790 on math 2. I applied to their engineering program and didn’t get in. I’m also in state but I live in another county. Does that affect their decision? I’m also in the top 5% of my school. I’m just confused because I got into uc riverside and cal poly Pomona so far so I don’t see why long beach would reject My application…
Also it makes me worry about ucla, ucb, ucsb, and ucsd as they are harder than long beach. Did I just get really unlucky?
The admissions rate approximates 35 percent; draw your own conclusions.
Yea. But look at their average statistics…I read they have to give residents of their area priority which means for me my csu is San marcos. So that would mean if you don’t live in long beach, your chances go down? That seems kind of weird.
Engineering majors at some California state schools (including long beach) are heavily impacted. With that being said, I am a little surprised you got rejected given that your GPA is much higher than the average (3.37), and scores much higher than the 75% percentile (590 MATH).
The only things I can think of (based on the CSU impaction website) is that you either: a) didn’t apply during the initial filing period, b) are applying as a transfer student into lower division classes (which isn’t allowed for impacted majors), or c) The applicant pool for LB this year had abnormally high stats.
@Nforaker (re post #3): I cannot – and will not attempt to – explain CSULB’s decision. I only point out (in post #2) that a >35 percent admissions rate applies, which isn’t inordinately selective.
CSULB does have competitive admissions.

Is your parent in the military? How are you a Calif resident if you live abroad?
Oh I meant I live in another county. Not country.
Yeah I’m a senior applying for freshman year and I filed during the normal filing period. I guess things just really didn’t work in my odds
I got into CSULB today with a 4.2 GPA and a 29 ACT. Sometimes, the CSU’s reject those who have high stats to leave more space for those who are more within the borders. That’s simply what I’ve heard. Either that or the school is just that selective and you got unlucky.
@Nforaker: Did you meet all the a-g course requirements? The year of fine arts requirement is a problem for some applicants. You could try to call admissions to see if they will tell you their reason for not accepting you. Good Luck and I am sure you will have many more acceptances coming your way.
Hmmm. Yeah I will call tomorrow to see if there is a real reason. I did complete all the requirements. Riverside is better anyways so I guess it doesn’t matter. It just concerns me for the future schools that are more competitive. Mainly ucla.
@Nforaker: You will end up getting into the school where you meant to go… Good Luck.
@Nforaker, we visited Long Beach’s engineering department last Spring 2014, but the first thing we were told at the admissions office was that the school receives over 80K applications for a limited number of spots in engineering, so unless my “son’s scores were high”, that it was going to be difficult. Additionally, Long Beach has Boeing on site, who rents facilities two buildings away from the engineering department, and employs engineering students at internship wages, so the department is inundated with engineering hopefuls.
Engineering is an impacted major; LB is a very popular school both for instate and OOS students for all of the STEM majors, and your 2010 SAT score is not competitive for that school’s engineering department. My son was admitted to CSULB’s computer engineering program last year, with a 2370 SAT; he also got into UCLA, USC and Caltech, but Long Beach was the least expensive and was an attractive option; Caltech offered him more money, so he went to Caltech.
Wow. I didn’t realize long beach had such a a tough engineering program to get into. It wasn’t ranked insanely high so I did not think it would be too difficult. Maybe I would have had better luck if I didn’t apply to the engineering school. I was kinda hoping the 800 would help a lot because I know 2010 isn’t anything crazy, but for engineering the math score is the most relevant. I’ll just stay hopeful for the other schools. Riverside is looking appealing but I have no idea how many internships opportunities I would find there.
CSU LB uses a somewhat different calculation for engineering programs.

No surprise, it weights Math more heavily. - which should have worked in your favor.
Your stats are well above average for the school - which suggests that you might not have completed an A-G requirement. The one that most frequently trips people up is F - a year of Visual/Performing Art.
The bad news is - all the CSUs and UCs have the same requirements - meaning, if you missed one of the requirements, you’ll be shut out of both systems.
For someone with your stats, that’s quite an oversight.
Good luck
No I got into ucr and pomoma already so I do have the a-g done. Besides, I did marching band for 3 year which filled that requirement. I don’t know. It’s strange.
@Nforaker: Sometimes there is no rhyme nor reason why one appicant gets it while another does not. Right now you have 2 good choices and I am sure you will have several more after UC acceptances in March. My younger son had 5 good friends apply for ME to Cal Poly SLO last year and only 1 was accepted. All had very competitive Stats. The 4 that were not accepted are attending UCLA (2), UCSB (1) and UCSD (1), go figure??
That’s very strange. For engineering, I’d expect both CP Pomona and UCR to be more selective than CSULB. If your heart is set on this school, you may want to appeal. They might have missed something.
Hm. I might but like gumbymom mentioned, I will have more options later on. Besides realistically I should take ucr or pomona over csulb.
