Imagine my shock when I opened the mailbox to find a rejection letter from Stern staring me in the face. After touring many colleges, it was crystal clear that NYU is the place for me, and I cannot imagine going to school anywhere else. When I called up the admissions office to ask why I was not accepted they said, "Frankly, we do not think you are able to handle the work load here at the prestigious New York University."

I have 4.3 (w) GPA, I have over 200 hours of service under my belt, and I own my own business - if there is anything that I am good at, it is "handling a big work load."

My question to you is this- do you think I am wasting my time sending an email to the Dean of NYU Stern? Like I said, I am really passionate about attending Stern and I do not want to give up hope yet.

who did you talk to that they said you couldn’t handle the word? someone from Stern? or an Ambassador? i’m curious.

i don’t really think e-mailing the Dean of Stern is going to do much. . . i figure they’re probably getting bombed with emails from other students, as well.

college admissions are crazy and unpredictable. i’m really sorry you didn’t get in. you can always try to transfer into Stern, although transfer admissions to Stern are very competitive.

Thanks for your reply. I believe it was an ambassador that I spoke with. I feel like emailing the dean is worth the shot because it certainly cannot hurt my changes at this point.

writing a letter to the Dean will likely make no difference. NYU receives like 30k apps a year, and 70% of them are rejected. Admissions is getting bombarded with stuff right now.

To be blunt, you’d basically be saying, “I was rejected but I still really want to come anyway!” there are so many factors that come into play - grades, SAT scores, reccommendations, extracurrics, personality, essays, etc…lots of good applicants get rejected. Almost every student has community service. Stern applicants always say they own their own business, even if it’s just a paper route. (I’m not trying to put down your business, just making a point about admissions in general). Sometimes really smart students get rejected for whatever reason.

I’m sorry you got rejected. If you want to give it a shot, email the Dean - be concise, polite, and firm. hope everything works out - you’ll get into another good college for RD with that GPA.

Also, the ambassador sounds like a dick. At the “prestigious New York University”? lol give me a break, how rude. the only reason Stern is ranked so high is because most Ivies don’t have Undergrad B schools.

hey…okay well first of all i got rejected too from CAS and definitely WRITE ur letter to the dean!! im doing a similar thing!! i just called NYU lol and i hope ppl dont get ideas and we’re the only two ppl lol but im sure ppl are going to be like “ooh maybe i shud try that” but it wont work guys! theres a secret to it! : P so i talked to a “special person” and she said usually they wont let ppl appeal but she’ll let me try! yayy soo im gonna write my explanation. i really regret sending in bad recommendations from teachers. thats probly what got me rejected.

i have a 4.1 and i was wondering if I could even handle the workload but theres ppl who get like 3.2 and around there…so im sure we would do fine if we put in the effort. idk where else to apply in new york. theres barnard and columbia…and i probably wouldnt get into columbia. and barnard is all womens. nothing is like NYU! : / it sux that i didnt get in but ill go there eventually. i havent lost hope : ]

Yeah babygirl, I think it was expected that you would get rejected. The amount of drama you threw into this forum showed your lack of confidence in your own credentials. I didn’t want to say anything but now it is necessary.

Time to face reality and pick a new school.

Thanks for your comments. First off, I just want to say that I hope I didn’t cause “drama” of any sort.

It was really just the ambassador’s “reasoning” that pushed me over the edge, because out of all the things that she could have said (that I would have respected,) she said that I could not handle the work load which is 100% not true.

Esnyujind - I’m sure there is less than a 1% chance that writing to the dean will change anything, but I know two people who did this and received positive results at other schools. Certainly cannot hurt me.

ITry - I though that before but I simply just wrote a polite letter to the Dean, and do not think that it would ever hurt my chances in the future. (I doubt I would even have a chance anyway as NYU Stern as very few transfer spots.)

All I can do now is wait and see. I am fully aware that I may have come off as a “whiny, immature child” but I am anything but that. I am simply a guy who has spent his life trying extra hard to reach his goals and to me, this is no different.

oh haha i dont think they were referring to you magic man lol and i think its kinda stupid how theyre getting all worked up over other people’s business. whether they are referring to you or me, this is certainly not how we would portray ourselves in an application. but i dont know if theyre not smart enough to figure that out or if they just try to poke fun at ppl for their own amusement.

soo u said it did work for your other friends? what did they do and where did they appeal to?
