Rejected from UCSB despite meeting all the TAG requirements

Hi, I tagged UCSB for economics and accounting and just found out that I was rejected. I’m confident I met the requirements, so I’m not sure why my application was rejected.

I completed at least 30 UC-Transferanle semester units (with ap credit) prior to the tag submission. I completed all the english and math requirements by the end of fall. I completed at least 60 UC-transferable semester units by the end of spring (with no more than 18 units needed in Spring 2020 to reach the total requirement). I attended a community college in my last regular session. I completed the IGETC. I earned an overall minimum 3.40 gpa in all UC-transferable coursework by the end of fall 2019. I earned a minimum 2.0 gpa in all UC-transferable coursework in the fall 2019 and spring 2020 terms with no grade lower than a C.

For the economics and accounting major, I’m supposed to maintain a minimum gpa of 2.75 with my major prep classes which include Calc 1 & 2, Macro & Micro Econ, and Financial and Managerial Accounting. Last semester, I took Calc 1 © and Financial Accounting (A). This semester I’m taking Calc 2, 8 week Macro Econ (A), Micro Econ, and Managerial Econ. I have an A in all those courses.

I believe they rejected me because I’m taking those major prep courses in the Spring, but no where (not on Assist or on their site) does it say I can’t do that.

I’d like to know why they rejected me and, if anyone can help explain why, I’d really appreciate it. Also, is there a way I can directly ask why I was rejected?

If it makes a difference, I was accepted into UCSC (Regents) and Davis. I would just like to know what I did wrong.

From UCSB website:

If conditions for TAG weren’t fulfilled, then UCSB considers you for regular admission:

Regarding course completing, UCSB requires:

Do any of these apply to you?

Definitely appeal!

Ya, I’m pretty sure I met all the requirements @lovecpa Should I email them first asking what I did wrong or do the appeal. Also, do you know how long it takes to hear a notification back from the appeal process. And should I talk to a counselor from my community college too?

Appeal! If there’s something you missed hopefully they will tell you what it is, so at least you’ll know why.

@Tustlop Hey there. I feel where you are coming from. I was also completing a lot of my major pre-reqs in this current Spring semester and was rejected from Cal. I called my admissions officer and he told me this was the main reason for my rejection. In your case, I believe this may be the primary problem as well. I would suggest appealing the decision, as that is what I will be doing as well. I am going to ask them to evaluate me in light of my Spring grades, and i think you should do the same. This is “new and compelling” information and I think your appeal should be accepted because otherwise you look fine in terms of coursework. Hope this helps! Best of luck moving forward.

@Tustlop Well I’m going to say there is something you didn’t fulfill because you got rolled out of TAG and then you were rejected from regular admission (although that could be arbitrary). I would contact TAG and find out why.

Also, it sounded like you were saying 2.75 overall gpa for major courses, whereas I read the rule as 2.75 minimum for each course. Not sure if you meant it that way.

Taking courses in spring should not be an issue.

Thanks @Ohm888 . I’m definitely going to contact UCSB about it. Also, I think it’s a 2.75 gpa for all major prep courses. Why else would it say “with no individual grade lower than a C.” If you were required to maintain a 2.75 gpa for each course, wouldn’t getting a grade lower than a B disqualify you. If that were the case, shouldn’t it say with no individual grade lower than a B because that would mean you couldn’t get a C (2.0 gpa).

^^ @Tustlop good point

Hey @Ohm888, I recieved an email from UCSB admissions stating:

“Thank you for your email and I am sorry to hear about your denial of admissions. The necessary Economics and Accounting major preparatory (MP) GPA is a 2.75 for this cycle and yours was a 2.0. You were denied because you did not meet the MP GPA.”

I replied with:

“Hi, I believe the 2.0 GPA is only coming from the Math 150 course I took last fall. I received an A in Econ 101 this semester which should bring my major prep GPA to a 2.75. I am also currently taking Math 155 and Econ 102 this spring semester and have an A in both courses. I was led to believe that major prep courses taken in the spring were included in the Major Prep GPA. Please let me know if I’m wrong.”

The courses listed need to be 2.75 with no OTHER course in the term lower than a C. The C part is referring not to major pre-req but the semester/quarter. At least that is how I interpret it.

@Tustlop - The quote above is coming directly from UCSB’s website with a link to verify.

It’s 2.75 GPA overall in your 4 major courses

  • Microeconomics
  • Macroeconomics
  • Calculus 1
  • Calculus 2
And none of those 4 major courses listed above can have lower than a C.
They are only referring to your major.

As my understanding, your grade, which is considered for TAG, is the average grade you have reached before the date they look at your application. So in your case, at that time, you only finished 1 Calculus class with a GPA of 2.0 because all the other 3 classes are in progress. That’s how you failed the TAG requirement.

That’s why the Admission Office stated: “for this cycle.”
