I found out of my acceptance yesterday into the School of Social Work. This was my second choice, first choice was psychology (liberal arts). I’m in the top 17% of my class at a very competitive high school, so class rank definitely is NOT the most determining factor.

Think it really also has to do with what your choice of major was. Son got in yesterday into School of Natural Science - Physics Program (1st Choice).
He’s 13% in class
2030 SAT
31 ACT
National Commended
National Hispanic Scholar
Co-Cap Wrestling
All the AP stuff to include taking a very heavy load this year when he could have relaxed a bit.
All the other volunteer stuff, letters, etc., but did have great letter of rec from HS Physics Teacher.

Looking at some of the other postings, McCombs is highly competitive and ranked #7 for undergrad in 2011. Other engineering, natural science programs are really competitive as well. Because UT is so competitve in-state, and so many get auto accepted - he focused on the physics program and placed school of engineering 2nd.
He also applied to Penn State, Ohio State, Iowas State, and Michigan, all for enineering and has been accepted to all (except Michigan, defferred, still waiting to hear from them). Hope everyone had a good backup plan since it is tough this year at UT.

Wow. My stats aren’t as great as others here but I managed to get in for Electricial Engineering, OOS. I also didn’t have to send any letter of recs or resumes. My school district screwed up ranking though, so I guess my essays and ECs helped.

tm209541 how did you know that you were a semifinalist for the Terry Scholarship?

I received a letter 2-3 weeks ago. I had to send them 3 additional letters of recommendation and I also included an updated resume. They will review this and choose finalists the first week of March, I believe. I’m going to appeal my admissions decision, so hopefully I’m not taken out of the running for the scholarship

What the stats in this thread should tell all of you is that if you’ve been capped at UT-Austin, IT’S NOT YOU. UT has a dysfunctional admissions system that is the diametric opposite of what every selective university in the country is looking for. Everyone else wants awesome, well-rounded applicants who have demonstrated excellence in a variety of areas, but all UT cares about is GPA GPA GPA. If you have spent the past four years becoming awesome only to have UT turn you down, it doesn’t mean you’re not awesome enough – they’re not even looking for awesome. Once their pool has been filled based on the dictates of the state legislature, they have very few spots left and still face other admissions requirements like athletes and international students. Being capped is UT’s politically correct way of saying “We really do want you, but we’re not allowed to accept you because of that stupid Top 9% law, so please come back next year when we can take you.”

So either go somewhere else to rock your freshman year before transferring to UT, or go somewhere else and rock for the whole four years. There are lots of excellent schools in Texas and elsewhere that would love to have you.

I feel ya. I got CAPed too.

Applied to the CNS.
4.0 GPA
Top 7% (originally top 13%. I sent in my mid-year transcript with my updated rank in January and it showed up on Be a Longhorn a couple of weeks later)
2090 SAT (800 CR, 650 M, 640 W)
All honors/AP/dual credit courses.
200+ volunteer hours.
3rd in state at an academic competition.
NHS for two years.

I think I wrote pretty strong essays, had one good and one stellar letter of recommendation, and submitted my expanded resume. I was a little bummed that I got CAPed, but hey, you can’t win them all right?
