Supplementary Recs-one from the associate dean of Duke Law School, who taught me. Another from a Duke alumnus who also taught me. Both are very strong, they said (and I love both of them so much; they are really nice!)

I have done two Duke TIP programs, and a Harvard course where I got an A- in International Law. I have a long list of EC's and officer positions, and the such of that nature.

Hooks: First Generation Immigrant from North Carolina with parents who are Lebanese refugees.

Duke is my first choice, but getting rejected from Yale hurt. I know people with 2400's and amazing stats are rejected from there, but I have to admit, I at least wanted to be deferred.

Some of my best friends are at Duke; I would LOVE to go there. Thanks guys!

yeah, getting rejected does hurt, I got rejected from Stanford, and my applications is likeyours, except my SAT are higher, but my EC's and essays are probably worse. Still, I know someone w/ worse numbers than you and I that got into duke ED. I think you have a high chance.

I think you've got a great shot at Duke. Don't take too much out of the Yale rejection...many kids with very similar stats to yours were rejected. Good luck! Maybe we will see each other at Duke next year. I'm hoping for the best too!

5's on 9 APs before Senior Year?
That is pretty good! Make sure to send all your AP scores in!
That 1430 could hurt a little bit for RD but I think you have enough going for you that your SAT won't be a problem.

Dont' feel bad. All the tops students from my daughter's school all got rejected, excepted on got deferred (we heard), and 3 applicants from other school all got rejected. I am talking about top students in top 100 national ranked school. My daughter got rejected too and here is her stats:

GPA: 4.00/4.62 1 out of 650
AP: 1 5's, 4 4's and 23's

IB Canadate

EC:

4 years newspaper, 2 years Editor in Chief (the only one who became EIC in junior year in shcool's 50 years history and the newspaper received county and national award). She received 2 first place in state in column and sport writing

4 years tennis varsity (Captain, MVP, coach award, CA ranked player, varsity Letter)
3 years student body (treasure and secretary)
2 years president (Amnesty International, Friday Night Life (VP)
2 Years Academic Decathone (10 individual award)
1 Year FBLA 3 place state award, not to mention other stuff such Rotary top 100, HNS, CSF, National commended school, AP with distinction.

With all those, I am confident there are other top tier ivy schools such as Harvard and Princeton and Stanford will love to have her. So don't loose your confidence, its Yale's lose, not yours.

The 670 SAT-math score won't help, but you're in the range for consideration. In your essay, you'll really need to explain how & why Duke is your "first choice," especially since you didn't apply to Duke ED. A large portion of the RD applicant pool will be comprised of students who didn't get in wherever they applied EA or ED, all trying to convince the ad com that Duke really is their top choice. Distinguish yourself from that crowd.

I'm really hoping that the associate dean's recommendation helps a lot. She said it was really strong, and it seems like she has some contacts at Duke.

Duke is my first choice by SOOOOO much!!! Thanks for the assurance guys; getting rejected only hurt because I thought it meant I wouldn't get into Duke (after applying to Yale, I regretted my decision).

I got rejected into Yale also which really sucks. Stanford is actually my first pick college though but I applied to Yale because I still needed to take my SAT II subject tests before applying to Stanford. I'm still going to apply to MIT, Stanford, Rice, and Brown though

Hey Obiwankanobi, I got rejected from Stanford too! We should start a club. It sucks, but honestly you can't hold it against yourself when you don't get into a school of that magnitude...they are nearly impossible! You never know unless you try!

I remember getting rejected EA from Stanford last year.. And I ended up at Duke : ]
As said previously, your SAT I math is probably lower than average here but besides, your application looks solid. I think you definitely have your chances.

How much do you guys think these will help:

Duke TIP International Affairs Institute
Duke TIP Pre-Law Institute (2 weeks each)

Recommendation from alumnus who taught me at the first one
Recommendation from the associate dean who was a professor at the second one

Thanks so much for the reassurance guys! I don't feel too bad about being rejected from Yale because I want to go to Duke, but as I said it is just so disheartening to think about perhaps being rejected from Duke too!
