Rejected Stanford EA

I got rejected from Stanford. I didn't even get deferred!

My Stats:

1600 SAT I
800 MathIIC/780Chem/800 Writing
4.54 GPA/ 4.0 UW
Rank 1/433
ECs: Captain of varsity soccer team, Newspaper editor, President and founder of philosophy club, Vice president of science club, intern for state senator, volunteer work for local wildlife habitat

After getting REJECTED early action from Stanford and not even deferred, I have lost all confidence in the college admission process. I am applying to Duke RD, and I am not so sure I'll get in. Do you guys think I have a good shot? Is Duke significantly easier than Stanford to get into?

Unbelievable. I'm kind of convinced college admissions is a crapshoot.

I know I feel like shtit right now. But do you think I have a shot at Duke?

I think you definitely do. Obviously you're incredibly bright, and very involved. The only thing I could think of is that your EC's don't have much focus. It's crucial that you find a theme to center your app around. Good luck to both of us.

I don't know why Stanford rejected you. It's their loss I guess.

Wow your stats are amazing. I don't think you'll have much of a problem. Good luck!!

I'm sorry about Stanford... I really wanted to go there too. But yes, Duke RD is admittedly easier to get into than Stanford (EA/RD).
Your stats are amazing and you show much leadership.
Just write a killer essay, tying together your EC's into one focus- as loveduke22 said.
Ah hell, just write an essay and I think you'll get in.
It's not the end of the world. I love Duke so incredibly much and in some ways am thankful I didn't get into Stanford.
Good luck!

Wow. I am speechless. I am applying to Stanford RD and am now completely dejected. Oh well, I am thinking UChicago (accepted) I think you have a great shot at Duke. I was thinking about applying.

cough you have a good shot at merit money cough

I wouldn't say merit money if you were rejected by Stanford, but I definitely think you have a VERY strong shot at Duke. I actually know a lot of people like you 1600/1 or 2 in their classes who did not receive merit money but got a likely letter in February/March from Duke, which I wouldn't be surprised if you received. However, merit money usually goes to those who received likely letters to (were being recruited heavily by) Stanford, Harvard, Yale, etc, which is not your case.

but how would they know she was rejected?

unless they're...patrolling these forums...o0

they wouldn't...but if gutrade was rejected, there may have been parts of his application which were less than stellar (unlike his stats), in which case they would show in applying to duke...

that's true. all the merit people I know were accepted to like harvard, princeton, stanford, yale, or something like that. it just works out that way...

Not necessarily true. I got a likely from Duke but wasn't in the running for merit money. The people I know that won scholarships never got likely letters but simply were told they were being considered for a scholarship.

My friend was deferred by Stanford Early Action but received some sort of Duke AB full scholarship. He still came to Stanford for some reason when they accepted him in April, and now he's my roommate! Personally I would have been angry at Stanford if they deferred me, and would have gone to Duke for revenge and for the sweet $$$. But my friend is getting better grades than me and is loving this place, so I guess things worked out for the best.

There's still hope for you Gutrade! You might end up going to Duke or Wash U in St Louis on a full ride! In that case, you could tell Stanford's insane admissions office to shove it :)

P.S. I think Duke is awesome and hella hard to get into. But your stats are simply amazing.
