Well, I ended up getting rejected to the 2006 Fall semester with a 1210 SAT and 3.5 GPA with 8 or so AP classes taken and decent EC's. However, admission decision page states that I was accepted to the 2007 Spring semester and could participate in Freshman Connection, a program for those who were deferred and allows them to complete up to 16 credits which are transferrable.

My concern is, will this put me behind those who started the Fall semester before me? My focus was to major in Business, and to transfer into Smith @ UMCP. Is it possible for me to take summer courses at UMCP which would allow me to stay on track with my graduating class?

Classes which can be taken (Fall Freshman Connection program) are:

* Fundamental Studies: Writing
* Fundamental Studies: Mathematics
* Distributive Studies (categories include):
o Humanities and the Arts
o Mathematics and the Sciences
o Social Sciences and History

I was intent on getting into Maryland's business program though, wouldn't I be behind compared to those who got accepted into it- their Freshman Fall semester? Or would everyone else end up having to take the same CORE classes I'm taking anyway? If not, could I take summer/winter courses to 'catch up'?

dude cant u just goto a community college for 1 semester? yer credits will transfer into UMCP and normal CORE classes. i actually think its better to take core classes at a community college, its cheaper, smaller classes and an easier chance to get an A.

the only negative side is that if you get 4.0 in fall at a community college, yer GPA wont transfer

yeah i'm on the same boat. i didn't get into business fall, but would like to take the appropriate courses so I can transfer to smith in spring. so i have the same question--does everyone including smith students take the same core classes? If not, what should i take? (if im in letters & sciences in the fall)

I had the same thing happen to me to, any thoughts on whats the best course to action. I really don't want to go to the local community college for a semester, but it would be easy credits.

BTW, is this just like getting a regular deferal so there is a still a slight chance to get accepted into the fall?

Didn't they offer you near campus housing in the new high rise? It seems like you can take core classes but just arent living on campus - sure sounds like a good deal to me. I know this was a new alternative this year - they want to expand the number of kids they can accept but can't house them all - so this was a way of accepting more and keeping you on track with the class of 2010. Did they give youthe name and number of a counselor to call and discuss or are they having any meetings or anything where you can get additional info?

Is this a new program? Those courses are what freshmen take..exactly...and they are offering housing? Doesn't sound like being deferred to me. Last year, my d. got her letter on Feb. 22 stating she was waitlisted for fall but would be accepted in the spring. She was happy with that and planned to enroll in another college for that one semester. On May 19, 2005, she got a phone call from admissions saying she was IN for the fall. From May 9th to when she got accepted, she made personal visits, emails and letters to several admissions counselors she had met along the way....and an Assistant Dean who had been helping her with the ACM program. When she made the Dance Team,her coach made a personal plea for her and I also sent a letter. All was worthwhile because she was one of the very few admitted from the waitlist. Her name was on almost every ad. counselor's list. My point is, if you want to get in, show them you are still interested and if admitted you will attend. Email, visit, call, whatever...just persue it. And as for the classes, you won't be behind. You can pick up classes for you major down the line...don't worry about it.

desvw--- is your daughter's name alex? i've seen a couple of your posts regarding what she's involved in here, and we have a new member of our sorority who is on the dance team. wondering if maybe it's the same girl!

LOL...no, but that's funny b/c she's teammates w/ Alex, curly blond hair, right? My daughter is Vanessa. She's in...um...theta, maybe? I don't know which one, but she loves, loves, LOVES...College Park! Go Terps!

i heard waitlists were eliminated this year and now just have the new freshman connection--that's what my friend said when she spoke with a counselor. (which i think there's no point when you can go to a community college to "catch up") u may want to check up on that if you are relying on waitlists to get into fall.

ego shmego. There is no shame in getting into UMCP just one semester behind. My distant cousin who got Spring said that he might go someplace else! WHY?? If UMCP was your first choice before this should not change ****. Those who go through the process are most likely dedicated and will do great at UMD. It matters where you end up, not where you start! Anyone starting here can be leagues ahead of others by the time they graduate and that is when egos matter. Seriously I have heard about twenty people already saying that they got into spring semester and they all feel awkward about it. I really don't think it is a big deal.

NEXT... bootleg you said you took EIGHT AP courses. If you did well on your tests that comes at to atleast 24 credits and depending on your AP courses and your scores you can push over 30. I think including my AP and college classes I will have about 34 or so credits before entering. More and more people are taking APs and college is becoming more like 3 years for students instead of 4. I will take all 4 years because I don't want to be in the "real" world but hey, CONGRATS TO EVERYONE IN FALL FOR GETTING INTO UMCP!!! PLEASE GO!!

"Does that mean UMCP, if given space availibility, will offer Fall admission to those who enroll in FC? Attending a community college is a blow to anyone's ego."

Yeah but my opinion is just that you might as well go to a community college and get many credits in diff areas rather than go to FC for a select few courses.. and no i don't think if you do FC that means fall admission. If you had fall admission then you would have gotten an acceptance letter; FC and fall admission are diff things. i suggest you call them and ask if they'll be offering fall to people after slots open up this year~~ good luck bootleg.
