I just got rejected from UW Madison as a transfer student. I am determined to apply again, since UW Madison is my dream school. I figure it was my poor highschool performance that killed my chances, since i only applied for transfer with about 5 classes on my transcript. However, I am doing extremely well this semester, and i am taking about 18 credits. Will applying with more credits offset my highschool record more? What else can i do to improve my chances for admission at UW madison?

Your best bet would be to complete a full AA or AS degree at a community college in Wisconsin that has a formal articulation agreement with UW Madison.

If you aren’t at a community college in Wisconsin, and don’t want to transfer to one, then you need to keep getting good grades wherever it is that you are. You should aim to have a full two years of classes, and a GPA as close to 4.0 as you can manage, by the time that you would be starting at UW Madison.

im at a state school in new england…i have a 3.6-3.7 with tough classes…should i take the sat again?

will transfering to my states flagship then applying to wisco be negative?

I’m a student here and I have a few friends who have transferred in with about the same GPA as you. However, I don’t know what your high school GPA was so it’s hard for me to compare you to them. But I definitely think that if you can get another semester of good grades, you have a great shot of getting in. Also, don’t neglect the essays.

Have you checked the Wisc website to see if they require you to submit your high school stats (including SAT) once you have a certain number of college credits?

In my state, the public colleges only look at your college gpa once you gave 30 credits or more. So that should affect your strategy if you think your high school stats were the problem.

yep, highschool GPA is abysmal. like a 2.0 :(

im getting a 3.8-3.9 this semester with math, sciences, and upper level classes 19 credits in total so ill reapply this fall and pray i get in this spring :D

I think you are doing an amazing job, mcfuggie. You will definitely have a better shot after completing more classes and I hope you are able get into the college. Be sure to have a few other schools on your list as well–with your GPA a lot of schools would be happy to have you as a transfer student, but it is still a bit of a guessing game which will offer you a place.
